ISO 50001:2011 @ Tata Power - DDL

1
ISO 50001

• What is it?
– ISO 50001:2011 Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for
use is a specification created by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO) for an energy management system.

– ISO 50001:2011 is based on the management system model of continual

improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO
14001. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management
into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.

– Successful Implementation depends on commitment from all levels and functions

of the organization, and especially from top management

2
ISO 50001
• What is it?
– ISO 50001:2011 focuses on a continual improvement process to achieve the objectives
related to the environmental performance of an organization. The process follows a plan
(Plan-Do-Check-Act, PDCA)
Top Management Commitment

 Baseline Based on Initial review

 Identify areas of high consumption and reduce
consumption & check efficiency of equipment

 EnKPI
 Energy Consumed per unit
 Efficiency
 Identify objects with targets and
prepare action plans

Journey towards certification
IMS Policy
 In order to align with the requirements of the new standard, the IMS Policy and Tata Power-
DDL’s Policy Manuals have also been revised and capacity building activities have also
been completed.

8
IMS Process
 In order to align with the requirements of the new standard, an IMS Process has also been
formulated for the Energy Management System along with necessary Work Instructions and
forms.
Document Type Document Number Document Name
Process COR-P-21 Energy Management System
Work Instruction W01(COR-P-21) Methodology for Conducting Energy
Review
Work Instruction W02(COR-P-21) Energy Considerations in Design
Work Instruction W03(COR-P-21) Procurement of energy efficient
services, products and equipment
Form F01(COR-P-21) Energy Review
Form F02(COR-P-21) IMP Format
Form F03(COR-P-21) Initiative List

9
Capacity Building Exercises
• In order to increase awareness about the ISO 50001:2011 Standard and motivating the
workforce to commit to the Energy Management System, An internal EnMS Auditor’s
Training was conducted.
• 27 Employees were covered in the training program.

10
Formulation of EnMT
With a view to meet the requirements of the ISO 50001:2011 Standard and carry out
various activities pertaining to it, an “Energy Management Team” has been formed.

•The roles and responsibilities of this team include:

• Ensuring establishment, implementation, maintenance and continual
improvement of Energy Management System.
• Identification of persons  & design activities in support of Energy Management
activities
• Reporting on energy performances
• Determining criteria & methodology for Energy Management and control
• Promoting communication & awareness of the standard

11
Formulation of EnMT
The members of the Energy Management Team are:

Name Designation Group

Yogesh Gupta AGM Maintenance Planning Group
Karunakar Jha AGM Energy Audit Group
Sachin Gupta Sr Manager Business Excellence
Manmeet Singh Sr Manager Operations – BU Civil Lines
Shruti Phanda Manager Business Services Group
Gagandeep Kaur Manager Plant Engineering
Rajneesh Rai Manager Procurement Quality
Parag Arora Manager Administration
Dipanwita Ray - Coordinator AGM Business Excellence

12
Optimising Own Energy Consumption

• Monitoring of usage with Building Owners & Admin HoGs on monthly basis of metered data
• Group-wise per capita monitoring & facilitating reduction
• Awareness creation through sessions, posters, localised communication, screen savers
• Implementation of “Red-Green” switches in offices for ensuring optimum usage of lights
• Procurement of Energy efficient equipment like LED tubes, lamps,
• Variable Refrigerant Flow system installed in Smart Grid & New Audi – AC compressor functions based on
availability of people
• Exploring possibility of installing VRF in Corp Office 2nd Flow
• 100% LED 36W against 72 Watts lighting load reduced
