Who is Corazon Aquino?
• Corazon Aquino or Maria Corazon Sumulong
Cojuanco-Aquino, Was born ion January 25, 1933 in
Tarlac, Philippines.
• She died on August 1, 2009.
• She was our 11th President and first female President of
the Philippines and in Asia.
• She was also dubbed as the “Mother of Democracy”.
Introduction
Cory Aquino’s speech was an important event
in the political and diplomatic history of the
country because it has arguably cemented the
legitimacy of the EDSA government in the
international arena.
•In 1986 Cory Corazon Aquino
more known as Cory Aquino the
symbol of the restoration of the
democracy and the overthrow of
the Marcos Dictatorship.
On September 18, 1986, Seven months
since Cory became the President, She
went to the United States and spoke
before the joint session of the US
Congress.
“The Government Sought to break him by
indignities and terror. They locked him up in
a tiny, nearly airless cell in a military camp in
the north. They stripped him naked and held a
treat of a sudden midnight execution over his
head.
Ninoy tried for buying a military
court, whose legitimacy Nonoy
adamantly questioned. Ninoy decide
to do a hunger strike and fasted for 40
days. That was the second time that
their family lost Ninoy.
• But his death was my country’s
resurrection and the courage
and faith by which alone they
could be free again.
Two million people threw aside
their passivity and fear to escort
him to his grave.
•That included $26 billion in total
foreign debt, and a communist
insurgency that grew, throughout the
Marcos era, from 500 armed
guerillas to 16,000. We were just at
the start of a long road to recovery.
• We fought for honor, and, if only for honor,
and yet, should we have to wring the
payments from the sweat of our men’s faces
and sink all the wealth piled up by the
bondsman’s two hundred fifty years of
unrequited toil?
