Geometric portrait tutorial

Crop your image if needed.


Turn your image black and white by clicking Image > Mode > Grayscale.
Click Discard to make black and white.
Select the shape tool and choose your shape. The polygon shape is a good one to start with.
Hold down the ‘Shift’ key whilst you draw your shape to keep it even. Fill the whole face. Make the colour and
outline of your shape blank, click ‘Properties’ select the red strike through for ‘Fill’ and ‘Stroke’
Click on the ‘Paths’ section, select your shape, right click and choose ‘Make Selection’. This will make your shape a
“live path”
Click your portrait image in the ‘Layers’ window and press ‘ctrl’ and ‘c’ to ‘copy’ then ‘ctrl’ and ‘v’ to paste. This will
create a new layer in your layers window where your portrait has been cut into the shape you drew
Delete your shape layer by clicking and dragging it down to the bin

Make sure the ‘Show Transform Controls’ box is ticked. Select your shape cut out layer and hover over the corner
of the shape box, rotate your layer
Repeat slides 5 – 10 making your shape slightly smaller that your first shape.
With your favourite edit, make sure you save it as a ‘PSD’ file. We will be using your favourite edit to make into a
‘GIF’. All of your other edits can be saved ‘as a copy’ and as a ‘JPEG’
