RANGE FOR MATERIAL OF CRYOGENIC STORAGE TANKS”.

In principle, stainless steel type 304 is used for the tank having small capacity and in case that the use of
9% Ni steel is not economical.
The stainless steel type 304 is also used for the membrane of in-ground and above ground tank.

OTHER RESTRICTIONS & LIMITATIONS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE INNER TANK SIZING (1/2)

1. Ratio of HLL/D (High Liquid Level / Tank Inside Diameter)

The ratio of HLL/D shall be thoroughly decided in consideration of stability of the inner tank at seismic
condition to determine the necessity of the anchorage on the inner tank that are preferably to be eliminated
to avoid penetrations into the tank foundation slab.

2. Limit of the Inner Tank Height

(1) Soil Conditions
Survey of the inner tank height limit due to soil conditions shall be thoroughly performed based on the
soil investigation report and preliminary tank foundation design including implementation of the soil
improvement and/or piling shall also be performed simultaneously.
(2) Insulation Material Strength
Limitation of the inner tank height due to the allowable strength of bottom insulation material including
safety factor and seismic load on the inner tank bottom. The inner tank height may be increased up
to 40 m in consideration of design safety factor and allowable compressive load for the insulation
material (cellular glass) and bottom pressure due to earthquake.

FILING AND WITHDRAWAL OF LNG (1/2) A World Class Energy Company

Recently in-tank (submerged) pumps and pump columns are provided with not only full containment tanks but also single
containment tanks instead of wall and bottom connections and penetrations as shown below, since the leakage of LNG to the
atmosphere can be minimized by avoiding all connections and penetrations on the tank below the maximum LNG level

Conventional Design with Penetrations below the LNG Level

PURGING
Purging is intended to inert the
oxygen out of the tank to the
content level of 8 – 9%, by using
nitrogen. Nitrogen Purge is to limit
the oxygen content so that it
cannot react with the hydrocarbons
and make some explosive mixtures.

Nitrogen is introduced slowly into

the bottom of the tank, and vented
through the top / dome of the
tank.

DE-MOSTURIZING / DRYING
The objective of Demosturizing is to eliminate moisture to the minimum level as low as possible. It
can be done simultaneously with Nitrogen purging process with increase nitrogen temperature to
specified value or can be done by introduce hot gas after completion of nitrogen purging.

LEVEL DETECTION
Normally LNG Tank has 2 (two) or 3 (three) Level Detection System, to monitor level condition
inside the tank. The System gives warnings or alarms in case of abnormal level condition such as Low
or High Level Alarm). The Level alarm is connected to Tank Trip System to protect the Tank and its
Operational boundaries. In case of High-High Alarm Level, rundown line valve will be automatically
closed to isolate the flow of LNG from process trains. In case of Low-Low Alarm Level, the system
will automatically shut the loading pumps down to protect the pump from cavitation.

PRESSURE & TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Pressure and Temperature Control in LNG Tank are done by means of Boill of Gas (BOG)
management using BOG Compressor and Marine Flare System. In case of temperature increment, the
Tank will produce more BOG thus increase its pressure. The continous running BOG compressor will
increase the load and take take more BOG to fuel system or directly send the BOG to Marine Flare
System. In case of extreme pressure increase that cannot handled by Compressor and Flare System,
the excessive gas will be vented to the atmosphere. If the pressure goes below the set-point, then
BOG compressor will be automatically stop, and the vacuum breaker will also automatically be
opened if pressure goes further below atomosphere pressure.

SAFETY AND RISK A World Class Energy Company

RECORD
LNG Shipping industry has an excellent safety record
• No shipboard fatalities over the life of the industry associated with cargo
• No major losses of cargo and only one minor LNG onboard fire (lightning strike near
vent riser, cargo tanks not affected)
• Two groundings resulting in major hull breaches without cargo loss
• Over 33.000 LNG voyages covering more than 60 million miles during the history of
the industry
• LNG shipping is viewed a lower risk versus crude oil, all things being equal (i.e.
operator experience, vessel size)

NOMENCLATURE A World Class Energy Company

Term Definition
parallel middle body the midship portion of a ship which maintains the cross-sectional
shape of the underwater hull form throughout its length; sometimes
known simply as parallel body (flat hull side)
depth of ship, is the vertical distance from the lowest point of the hull to the
measured deck level
midship
in or near the middle of a ship; same as amidships

length overall the extreme fore and aft length of a ship measured from the foremost
point of the stem to the aftermost point of the stern; commonly
abbreviated as LOA
stern / AFT
the after end of a ship; based on the different cross sectional shape

bow / FWD
the forward end of a ship's hull; based on the different cross sectional
shape

NOMENCLATURE A World Class Energy Company

Term Definition
air draught the vertical distance measured from the ship's waterline to the highest
point on the ship; usually comes into consideration when the ship has
to sail under overhead bridges in the river
ballast any weight in solid or liquid form taken on a ship to increase draught,
to change trim, or to improve the stability; use of sea water is common
bar sand or silt forming a bank across the mouth of a river or harbour
entrance; this build-up reduces the water depth and limits the draught
of a ship which can cross it
bar draught maximum draught which a ship can take to pass over a bar or sand
bank
block coefficient the ratio of the underwater volume of a ship to the volume of a
rectangular block having the length, breadth and draught of the ship
    CB =  immersed volume
                   L x B x H

NOMENCLATURE A World Class Energy Company

Term Definition
deadweight
total weight of cargo, stores, fuel and water needed to submerge a ship
from her light draught to her maximum permitted draught; it is given
by the difference between the load displacement and light
displacement (also known as lightweight); DWT for short

draught marks
figures welded on the bow, midship and stern of each side of a ship's
shell plating to indicate draught; the distance is read from the lower
edge of each number; draught measured at the bow is called forward
draught and at the stern is called aft draught

draught survey survey carried out to determine the cargo weight on board by
measuring the ship's draught
extreme draught
draught measured to the lowest projecting portion of a ship

lightship draught
draught when ship is empty and deadweight is zero

the lines which are marked and painted amidships on

each side of a ship to indicate the maximum
permissible draughts of loading adjusted for various
seasons and zones; also known as Plimsoll marks, so
named after Samuel Plimsoll, a British Member of
Parliament who introduced and promoted its
widespread use in 1875

TF: Tropical Fresh water line; F: Summer Fresh water

line; T: tropical load water line; S: Summer load water

to the rectangular area having the breadth and draught of the section;
also known as midship coefficient

    CM =  midship section area

                      B x T

scantling draught
the maximum draught which meets the strength requirements; this is
usually used when the draught corresponding to the freeboard
computed according to the Load Line Convention is greater

summer draught
the maximum permissible draught to which the ship may be immersed
when arriving at any port located in the summer zone

NOMENCLATURE A World Class Energy Company

Term Definition
trim indicates the difference between the forward and after draughts of a
ship; when a ship is said to "trim by stern", the after end of the ship is
deeper and when "trim by head", the ship is deeper in the forward
end
waterline the line at a ship's side formed by the surface of water at a specific
draught
length between the length of a ship between the forward and after perpendiculars;
perpendiculars commonly abbreviated as LPP or LBP
displacement the weight of water displaced by a ship floating in a given condition;
a measure of ship's size
tonnage size of a vessel, expressed in tons; not necessarily based on weight
Gross Register gives the total internal volume of the vessel in one hundred cubic
Tonnage feet, less the volume of certain exempted spaces which provide
comfort to the crew and ship's safety; also known as Gross tonnage
or GRT for short

Floating LNG Receiving Terminal A World Class Energy Company

Drivers for Floating LNG

 Cost
 Competitive cost in number of areas
 Environmental
 Strong environmental lobby amongst local communities against onshore
facilities
 No environmental impact on shore line
 Security and Safety
 Remote from inhabitants, hence consequences of accident limited
 Contain or lower risk arising out of terrorist
 Regulatory
 Planning or permitting may be shorter for offshore facilites

Floating LNG Receiving Terminal A World Class Energy Company

There are a number of issues that need to be carefully examined

when considering a floating LNG facility :
 Location and Sea Condition
 Type of Vessel and Containment
 Mooring of the facility
 Access for export and import vessels (tugs & pilotage)
 Method of Cargo Transfer
 Type of Plant Liquefaction / regasification
 Deck Congestion
 What if the LNG supply vessel must leave part full ?

Location and Sea Condition

Selecting the location may not be as simple as it first appears
 Close to User
 Far enough away to be un-noticed
 Local Administration
 Safe Sea Access
 Tug Assistance
 Prevailing Weather

Mooring of the Facility

 The control of the moorings for any floating offshore facility is of
extreme importance
 There are many types of location system but they all depend
upon anchors or piles in the seabed and a spread of chain cables
 They must be designed for the worst possible operational
conditions

Method of Cargo Transfer

 Several alternatives are being
proposed (Loading Arm,
Cryogenic Hoses, Boom to
Tanker, etc)
 The working group developing
standards for offshore LNG
loading/unloading system is
currently overseeing approval of
hoses for ship-to-ship LNG
transfer

 Metering and Control
 Handling BOG
 Environment

SINERGY – Safety, health & environment – INnovative – profEssional – integRity – diGnitY 173
Floating LNG Receiving Terminal A World Class Energy Company

Deck Congestion
 This is a well known issue in gas and
petrochemical plants
 An explosion will accelerate through
closely packed plant and pipe racks
causing more damage due to blast
overpressure
 Space may be severely limited on
floating units
 Great care will be required with the
design of floating LNG units to ensure
adequate space breaks in plant and
pipework are provided

SINERGY – Safety, health & environment – INnovative – profEssional – integRity – diGnitY 174
Floating LNG Receiving Terminal A World Class Energy Company

Emergency Departure
 What happens if the loading or discharging
LNG carrier must leave in partially filled
condition due to heavy weather
 Most LNG carriers are not suitably
reinforced for operations at sea in a
partially filled condition
 Specialised study taking into consideration
the ship, the containment type, the
prevailing wind and waves.
 Gives the ship master sufficient
information to place the ship on the safest
heading whilst cargo is re-distributed on
board
