SOLVING PROBLEMS
INVOLVING QUADRATIC
EQUATIONS
Let’s Begin!
OBJECTIVE:
-Solves word problems involving
quadratic equations
Translating Verbal Statement into
Mathematical Statement
To write algebraic expressions and equations, assign a
variable to represent the unknown number.
*The letter “𝒙” is used to represent the unknown.
In translating word problems, the words sum, total, difference,
product and quotient imply at least two parts – use
parentheses when a sum or difference is multiplied.

What is asked? the length and the width of the billboard
Representation AArea Wwidth LLength
What are the The length of the billboard is 4𝑚 longer than its width .
given?
w + 4
The area of the billboard is 96 𝑚2.
𝑨=𝟗𝟔
Problem 1:
An amusement park wants to place a new rectangular billboard to inform
visitors of their new attractions. Suppose the length of the billboard to be
placed is 4 𝑚 longer than its width and the area is 96 𝑚², what will be the
length and the width of the billboard?

𝑹𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒔 :− 𝟏𝟐,𝟖
What is asked? the length and the width of the billboard
The equation has two solutions: 𝒘 = −𝟏𝟐 or 𝒘 = 𝟖.
However, we only consider the positive value since
the situation involves measure of length.
𝑳=𝒘 +𝟒 Conclusion:
𝑳=𝟖+𝟒 Since 𝑤 = 8 and 𝑙 = 12, we can conclude
𝑳=𝟏𝟐 that the width of the billboard is 𝟖𝒎 and
the length of the billboard is 𝟏𝟐 𝒎.
Problem 2:
If the square of a number is added to 3 times the number, the
sum is 108. Find the number.
What is asked? the number

If the square of a number is added to 3 times the number, the
sum is 108. Find the number.

𝟏 𝟏 Both values of 𝑥 will be
𝑥1 + 𝑥2 =−𝟑 𝑥1 ∙ 𝑥 2=− 𝟏𝟎𝟖 used as solutions regardless
of the signs, since it is a
𝑹𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒔 :− 𝟏𝟐, 𝟗 number problem.
Problem 3:
A rectangular table has an area 27and a perimeter of 24. What are the
dimensions of the table?
What is asked? the dimensions of the table
𝐴= 𝐿 ∙ 𝑊 𝑃=2 𝐿+2𝑊
24=2 𝐿+2𝑊
27=𝐿 ∙ 𝑊 24=2 𝐿+2𝑊
Product of the Roots 𝑳 ∙ 𝑾 =𝟐𝟕 2 2 2
𝑳+𝑾 =𝟏𝟐 Sum of the Roots
Problem 3:
A rectangular table has an area 27and a perimeter of 24. What are the
dimensions of the table?
Product of the Roots Sum of the Roots
𝑳 ∙ 𝑾 =𝟐𝟕 𝑳+𝑾 =𝟏𝟐
.
Roots: 𝟗 ,𝟑
This implies that the width of the table is 3 ft and its length is 9 ft.
