LESSON 1- PORTRAIT DRAWING

Community- refers to the people who live in a particular

area. The people who belong to a community have
different personalities and ways of line. But there are
people in the community who are united in their goal- to
serve others. These people are called community helpers.
Community Helpers- They help protect their
neighborhood an work to improve the quality of life in
their community.
Portrait- is a picture, drawing, or painting that shows the
likeness of a person, particularly of the face. It is
composed of lines and shapes.
Lines and Shapes- are two basic elements used to form
the features of the subject of a portrait drawing.
Line- is a continuous mark made on a surface by moving
from one point to another.
TWO MAIN KINDS OF LINES
a. Straight Line- is drawn in one direction and does not
bend.
Kinds of Straight Lines
1. Horizontal Lines- are drawn from left to right or right
to left across a surface. These lines suggest a feeling of
calmness and rest. They make an object appear lying
down or asleep.
HORIZONTAL LINE
2. Vertical Lines- are drawn from the top to bottom.
These lines help create the feeling of stability,
independence, and strength.
3. Diagonal Lines- are drawn from left to right or right to
left in a slanting position. These lines express movement
or action. They make something appear falling or rising.
DIAGONAL LINE
b. Curved Lines- is drawn in different directions and can
be bent. Express flowing movement. No parts of curved
lines are straight. These lines show gracefulness and
style.
KINDS OF CURVED LINES

1. Concave Lines- are lines that are curved or rounded

inward like the inside of a bowl.
2. Convex Lines- are lines that are curved or rounded
outward like the outside of a ball.
CONCAVE LINE
CONVEX LINE
3. Spiral Lines- are lines that are winding or circling
around a center and seems gradually moving away or
moving closer to it.
4. Wavy Lines- are slightly curved lines alternately going
up and down, or from right to left.
SPIRAL LINE
WAVY LINE
SHAPES

Shape- is an enclosed or space that has height and

width.
Two Types of Shapes
1. Geometric Shapes- are exact mathematical shapes.
Examples: circles, squares, rectangles, triangles
Common Geometric Shapes- cross, heart, star, diamond
2. Organic Shapes- irregular shapes like those found in nature.
Lines and shapes- go together in making a portrait. A line may
be used to outline a shape.
Lines and Shapes form the elements of a portrait.
The most important geometric shape used in portrait
drawing is the oval.
Vertical and Horizontal Lines- are used as basic outlines and
guides in drawing the different features of the face in portrait.
WAYS HOW VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LINES
ARE USED IN MAKING PORTRAIT DRAWING

1. Draw a vertical line in the middle of the oval,

dividing it into lines halves.
2. Draw a horizontal line across the oval to set the eye
line.
3. Divide the oval further by drawing two more vertical
lines. It is now divided into four halves. Then draw
four more horizontal lines below the eye line.
4. Start drawing the different facial features within the
guidelines. Draw the eyes on the first and third
vertical lines along the eye line. Draw the nose on
the third horizontal line. Then draw the mouth on
the fourth horizontal line.
5. Add other facial features like eyebrows, eyelashes,
ears, and hair, and details of the face.
Take note that the facial features on both sides of a
portrait should the same sizes and shapes to achieve
balance. If you draw a line in the middle of the portrait,
and each side shows the same features of equal weight,
then your artwork has balance or displays equal
balance.
