Looking at Objects and Classification

Day 1 If you dont understand anything, please ask questions. I want you to understand and I know it will be hard.

When looking at objects, it is possible to put them together in a group. Look at the following slides and think of how to put them together. What qualities does each one have?

These are all grouped by color.

But how can those objects be grouped?

But what if an object has no shape?

chewy

hard soft

fats and oils dairy meat

vegetables fruits grains

They are separated by food groups.

How can I describe this different group?

How can I describe this group?

Easy can you guess?

minty

sweet

fresh

Gross!

fishy

dirty spicy

smoky

Each one of these is called a property.

A property is a characteristic that can be used to describe an object or substance.
But what does this mean for us? Lets do the Looking at Objects worksheet (p. 5)

1. Look at the objects on the table. Choose four objects and write a description of each one on the chart.
Name the object

2. What is each object made of?

3. List some properties of the materials that make up each object.

What are some properties of each material?

Describe the object

List the material(s) the object is made of.

4. Compare your description of each object with the properties of the materials that make up the object. What do you notice? What does this mean?

Each object has many different properties Some objects share similar properties.

Classifying Objects
Think about each object. They can be classified, or sorted into groups, by their properties. Basically youre looking for something similar in more that one object. Think about their
shape texture color materials it was made of type

Look at the objects again

Do any share certain properties with other objects? Give an example. Lets write an example together. _______ and _______ are similar because they are both ________.

Choose a property and classify the objects by properties. Fill in the chart. Add more groups if needed.
Property: _______________________ Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4

Choose a different property and reclassify the objects. Fill in the chart. Add more groups if needed.
Property: __________________ Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4

Why is it possible to classify a group of objects in more than one way? Objects can have many different properties that can be similar with others.
