Fibre Identification Test
Objective of Fibre Identification
Test
 Identification of Fibre

 Identify the Maturity of Fibre

 Identify the Fibre fineness, evenness & hairiness

Textile Fibre

Textile fibre is the basic raw material which can be spun

into a yarn or made into a fabric by various method
including weaving , knitting , felting and twisting . For
quality fibre different types of fiber testing are done .
Process of Fibre Identification
We commonly use two process :

 Physical Test (Burn Test)

 Chemical Test
Physical Test (Burn Test) Contd.

Chemical Test
Steps for the chemical test are as follows:
 Step 1 : Distinguishing between wool and silk

 Step 2 : Distinguishing between cellulose

diacetate and cellulose triacetate

 Step 3 : Distinguishing between nylon 6,6 and

nylon 6
 Step 4 : Determining acrylic fibre

 Step 5 : Determining poly (polyester) fibre

 Step 6 : Distinguishing between cotton and viscous

reyon
 Step 7 : Distinguishing between polypropylene and

polyethylene
Yarn Count Test

 Yarn occupies the intermediate position in the

manufacture of fabric from raw materials.

 Yarn results are therefore essential both for estimating

the quality of raw material and for controlling the
quality of fabric produced.
Objective of Yarn Count Test

 To know the yarn properties

 To know yarn count, fineness, hairiness, strength etc.

Type of Yarn Testing
 Yarn count

 Twist per unit length

 Appearance

 Evenness and regularity

 Hairiness
Yarn Count Measurement Contd.
 The count is nothing but a numerical expression
which defines the thinness or thickness of a yarn.

 System of yarn numbering –

- Direct system
- Indirect system
- Universe system
Yarn Count Measurement Contd.
 Indirect system
 In this system the count is the number of units of

length per unit of weight of yarn. In this case higher

the count, finer is the yarn.
 The yarn number or count, N = (L*w)/(l*W)

Where, W = The weight of the sample

w = The unit weight of the sample
L = The length of the sample
l = The unit length of the sample
Yarn Count Measurement Contd.
 Direct system
 In this system the count of the yarn is the number of

units of weights per unit length of yarn.

 The yarn count number, N = W*l/L

Where, W = The weight of sample

L = The weight of sample
l = The length of the sample
Yarn Count Measurement Contd.
 Universe system
 Tex system of yarn numbering is called as universal
sytem
 Some methods of measuring the count –
- Quadrant balance method
- Beesleys balance
- Warp reel and balance method
Yarn Count Measurement Contd.
 Wrap reel balance method :-
 Apparatus : Warp reel, balance, weight box, cotton
yarn in hank from

Warp Reel Balance

Yarn Count Measurement
 Working procedure-
- Warp reel needs to be adjusted
- Length should be measured
- The sample should be weighed by balance
- The operation is repeated 12 to 16 times taking
their means count is calculated by direct system
