History Of ASTM
Originally called the “American Society For
Testing Materials” in 1902,
It Became the “American Society For Testing and
Materials” in 1961 before it changed its name to
“ASTM international” in 2001 and added the
tagline “standards worldwide” in 2014 it
changed the tagline to “Helping our World Work
better”.

What is ASTM?
ASTM, International, formaly known as
American Society for Materials, is an
international organization that devolps and
publishes voluntary consensus technical
standards for a wide range of materials,products,
and service. Some (i.e 12,575ASTM voluntary
consensus standards operate globally.
Headquarters is in West Conshohocken,
Pennsylvania.
Purpose of ASTM Standards?
The American Society for Testing and Materials
Its purpose was to address and prevent the
frequent rail breaks that were plaguing the
industry by devolping standards that would
ensure higher quality rail product. Today, the
American Society for Testing and Materials is
known as ASTM international.

 A = Iron and Steel Materials
 B = Nonferrous Metel Materials
 C = Ceramic, Concrete, and Masonry Materials
 D = Miscellaneous Materials
 E = Miscellaneous Subjects
 F = Material for Specific Applications
 D = Corrosion, Deterioration, and Degration,
and Degradation of Materials

 ASTM Standrads are used by individuals
as well as companies around the world.
 Engineers and Scientist used them in
laboratries.
 Architecture used them in planes

ASTM has 30,000 volunteer member more
then 140 countries.

• ASTM does not have any testing facillities to


acccomodate requests for one-off testing
product.
• NOTE ASTM has not attempted to investigate,
rate, endorse, approve or certify any
laboratory listed in the directory.
