Review:
Designing an experiment- variables
What is the purpose of A and B?
What do they show?
Interpreting results- trends
A student investigates the effect of different
concentrations of auxin on plant shoot and root growth.
Below are the results:
Describe- Say what you see! Comment on peaks, troughs and use data points to back up your
description- don’t forget units!

Explain- Give scientific reasoning for why there are peaks, troughs and link this to theory.
Suggesting improvements- are there any limitations?

Your task- Come up with some questions to ask the student that did this practical.

• Did they use the same volume of auxin concentration?

• Did they do any repeats? (What is the purpose of this?)
• How much time did they allow before checking growth? Was this
amount of time sufficient?
• Were other variables such as light, temperature and carbon dioxide
concentration controlled?
• What impact would this have had on their results?
