ETYMOLOGY
POLITICS – comes from the Greek word “Polis”
which means “affairs of the cities”

GOVERNANCE – comes from the Greek word


“Kubernaein” which means “to
steer”
What is Politics?
• Heywood (2013) – an activity that involves interaction of
people, whose relationship is characterized by conflict
and cooperation, and who come together to solve such
disagreements through binding solutions.
• In general, the study of politics is the human interaction
within a community. It concerns the life of every
individual in the community.
What makes social interaction a
political one?
• Any form of social interaction that involves the art of government, public affairs,
compromise and consensus, or power and distribution of resources is political.

Description of Politics
Politics as…
Political concerns the affairs of the state. It focuses on the personnel
“art of government”
and machinery of the government.
Politics is the conduct and management of public interest and,
“public affairs”
therefore, political affairs.
Politics attempts to resolve conflict through discussion, compromise,
“compromise and consensus” bargain, and consensus, wherein people arrive at a binding
decision.
Politics involves the exercise of authority in the production,
“power and the distribution of resources” distribution, and use of resources. This describes who gets what and
under what circumstances.

Government vs Governance
Government
 group of people who rule or run the administration of a country
 the body of representatives that governs and controls the state
at a given time
 the medium through which the power of the state is employed.
Governance
  the act of governing or ruling
 the set of rules and laws framed by the government that are to
be implemented through the representatives of the state
 “governance is what governments do”
Study of Politics
Political Science – is a social science discipline
that explains the state and the government.
- study of politics and power from domestic,
international, and comparative perspectives.
State – political community that involves four
important elements, namely, people, territory,
sovereignty, and government.
Study of Politics
• Heywood (2013) summed up major schools of thought in political
science.
1. Philosophical Tradition – traditional approach to politics (what
already exist)
2. Empirical Tradition – impartial and should be tested through
observations of reality (based on experience)
3. Scientific Tradition – objective and quantifiable ways of studying
politics (research)
