ABSTRACT

 Aim of our project is to determine the behavior of black cotton soil

with rice husk ah and fly ash for stabilization purpose.

 Normally black cotton soil having higher density. To determine the

maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength and some
other basic properties of soil with this additives.

 Rice husk ash having higher bonding property and fly ash having
smaller specific gravity.

 So by using this additives partly we will increase the strength of

stabilization for road construction.
MATERIALS USED
 BLACK COTTON SOIL

 RICE HUSK ASH

 FLY ASH
SYNOPSIS
 To improve the soil property.

 To prepare a high stabilized road way in expansive soil.

 To improve the strength and durability.

 To reduce moisture content in soil and to reduce shrinkage

cracks.
GENRAL

 Soil can be used as a load bearing material or construction material.

 In many situations the soil present in the field may be a problematic

one such as expansive soil.

 Expansive soils undergo volumetric changes in water content.

 The dual problem of swelling and shrinkage causes damage to many

lightly loaded structures.

 In order to proceed with construction under engineering conditions,

some techniques are needed to improve such properties of the soil.
SOIL STABILIZATION

 Soil stabilization is referred to as procedure in which a special

proportioned /added or removed or other chemical material is added
to a natural soil material to improve one or more of its properties.

 One of the common methods of stabilization can also be achieved by

mechanically mixing the natural soil and stabilization agents and then
the mixture is blended together so as to obtain a homogenous
mixtures.

 Commonly used stabilizing agents are

lime,cement,bitumen,polymers,calcium and sodium chloride.
RICE HUSK ASH
Rice husk ash is collected from sindhu gangai rice mill, kangayam.

PROPERTIES
• Water absorption will be more.
• Excellent mechanical properties like internal bond strength, elasticity,
abrasion resistance.
• Increase surface hardness.
• Light weight.
FLY ASH

Fly ash is collected from

PROPERTIES

 Fine residue collected from the burning of pulverized coal in the

thermal plant.

 Silty non cohesive material having a relatively smaller specific

gravity than normal soils.

 Gray in color.
LITERATURE REVIEW

 The expansive soil occurs all over the world.

 India has large tracks of expansive soil known as black cotton soil,
covering an area of 0.8 million sq.km, which is about 20% of total
area.

 The major areas of their occurrence are states of Maharashtra,

Gujarat, southern parts, eastern parts of MP, Andhra Pradesh and
Karnataka.
EFFECT OF STONE DUST ON THE STRENGTH
CHARACTERISTICS OF BLACK COTTON SOIL STABILIZED
WITH RICE HUSK ASH
Manjunath K R , Rohith L (2015)

 In the present study influence of stone dust on the quality characteristics of Rice
husk ash stabilized black cotton soil to increase the features of subgrade soil
were determined.

 Atterberg’s limit, Compaction, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and

California Bearing Ratio (CBR) experiments were carried out on the specimens
of native soil and BC soil with stabilizers. Different specimens have been made
by taking soil with different percentage of stone dust (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and
25%).

 All test were led according to IS 2720 standards. The results demonstrated less
value of strength parameters for BC soil, but after the stabilization BC soil
indicated increased value of CBR, UCC. For better stabilization result, the
optimal percentage of Soil: Rice husk ash: Stone dust was found to be 75: 10: 15
CBR STUDIES ON EXPANSIVE SOIL USING
STABILIZED RICE HUSK ASH CUSHION
Dr. M. Rama Rao , K. Ramesh Babu , K. Siva Kiran(2015)
 These studies indicates that the soaked CBR increases with increase in lime
content up to 8%, beyond which it begins to fall slightly. Thus, 8% may be
considered as the optimum lime content from the point of view of increase in
soaked CBR also.

 Any amount of lime added beyond 8% lime content would remain unutilized
and leaves soft pockets in the rice husk ash matrix. This results in a reduction
of the soaked CBR value.

 It can also be inferred that the soaked CBR increases with an increase in the
thickness of the stabilized rice husk ash cushion.

 The soaked CBR of the expansive soil bed without any cushion was as low as
0.85%. Provision of limestabilized rice husk ash cushion improves the
soaked CBR to 21.02%. Hence it can be used for sub-base.
