the history involving the research.
3

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

✖ It is the first essential component of Chapter One of your research project. It

introduces the background to the study to situate the study in its proper
perspective and context.

✖ It indicates the root of the problem being studied and presents an

appropriate context of the problem in relation to theory, research, the extent
to which previous studies have successfully investigated the problem, and
where gaps exist that your study may attempt to address.
4

BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY
- Overview of your topic (e.i. What do you want readers to know about
concerning your topic?)

- 1. General information about your topic

- 2. Context of your topic
- 3. Rationale/Justification of your topic
5

BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY

In a nutshell, the background to your research project must include

detailed information in which you

(a) explain what previous studies state about your topic,

(b) discuss current developments surrounding your topic, and
(c) identify the gap in the literature that leads to your study.
Example:
7
