LO: To discuss the function and adaptation of
organs within the digestive system
• State the organs of the digestive system
(4)
• Describe the function of these organs (6)
• Explain how the small intestine is
adapted to its function (8)
• Suggest other organs associated with
the digestive system (9)
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
TREASURE HUNT
The digestive system is made up of lots of different organs.
Your task is to find out about these different organs and the
enzymes involved in digestion.

Use the posters around the room to:

1. Write the function of each organ.
2. Name the chemicals produced by each organ.
DO NOT WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN!

You have 20 minutes!

Chemicals Produced
Digestive Organ Function
(inc. enzymes)
Mouth Chew and breakdown food Amylase
Pharynx / Carries food to stomach through /
Oesophagus muscular contractions - peristalsis
Muscular walls churn food, breaking HCl acid and Pepsin
Stomach
it down to a useful form (protease enzyme)
Produces bile that neutralises HCl Bile (an alkaline
Liver
acid and emulsifies fats substance)
Gall Bladder Stores excess bile /
Produces digestive enzymes and Protease
Pancreas releases them into small intestine. Lipase
Carbohydrase (amylase)
Produces digestive enzymes and Protease
Small Intestine where food is absorbed into blood Amylase
Lipase
Large Intestine  Excess water is absorbed from food /
Rectum & anus Where faeces is stored /
ENZYMES IN DIGESTION

What are enzymes? What do they do? What is their role in digestion? Can you
name 3 types of enzyme? Where are the enzymes of digestion produced?
ENZYMES IN DIGESTION
Enzymes break down
large insoluble food
molecules into smaller
soluble ones.
These soluble food
molecules are then
adsorbed into the blood
through the small
intestine.
THE SMALL INTESTINE

State the features of the small intestine. What is the key word for the
movement of food? How do villi help us adsorb food? What 3 features do they
have?
THE SMALL INTESTINE
• The small intestine has a
very large surface area
covered in villi.
• It also has a rich blood
supply and short
diffusion distance to the
blood vessels
• This greatly increases
diffusion and active
transport of food into
the blood.
WATER ADSORPTION AT THE
LARGE INTESTINE
The muscular walls of
the small intestine
squeeze undigested food
(peristalsis) on to the
large intestine.
This is where water is
adsorbed from the
undigested food into
your blood
OTHER ORGANS INVOLVED
IN DIGESTION
The liver is also
involved in digestion
(amongst other roles
such as detoxification).
The liver produces bile
which aids in the
digestion of lipids
(fats).
CHALLENGE – BEAT THE QUESTION
GRID
1. State 3 organs 4. State the function 7. State the type of
of the digestive of the mouth tissue which lines the
system small intestine.
2. Name the first 5. State the function 8. Explain how the
organ of the of the oesophagus small intestine is
