Occupational

Health and
Safety
True or False:
1. Make a record of each treatment-date,
name of chemical applied, and
technique of application.
2. Make sure that all exits are crowded.
3. If the person experiences difficulty. in
breathing, provide enough ventilation or
artificial respiration.
4. Working with chemicals does not
require proper training and the use of
protective clothing.

5. Store the chemicals according to

the type of containers-plastic, glass,
etc.
Word for study
1. Hazard- anything either situation or
things that can cause harm.
2. Risk – the likelihood that someone will
be harmed or get injured in anything.
3. Material’s Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)- a
document that contains all the
information about the chemicals.
The Safe Method
How can an employer ensure the safety of
his/her workers while at work?

•See the hazard,

•Assess the risk from hazards,
•Fix the hazards, and
•Evaluate the results
See and Assess the Hazards
Farm owners and workers should know how
to identify the risks and hazards in the
workplace.

1. Manual handling of farm supplies (fertilizer,

compose soil, seedlings) may cause back
injury, sprains, and swelling of arms and
shoulder.
2. Working with machinery or heavy
equipment has a higher risk of accidents
and may be fatal.
3. Exposure to toxic, flammable, and
dangerous chemicals.
4. Slips, trips, and falls due to uneven
surface, poor lighting, and broken ladder.
5. Working with electricity.
Fix and Evaluate the Hazards
Here are some ways to avoid risk of injury
and accidents:

Ensure that all workers have proper and

adequate training such as in manual
handling, use of machinery, handling of
chemicals, and electrical wirings.
For manual handling, practice the correct
way of lifting and carrying heavy loads
such as feet flat on the ground, bent knees
and lifting the load close to the body.

For machine operations, only authorized

and trained personnel should be the one
handling the machine.
For slip, trip, and falls, the following
safety measures should be practiced:

•Keep all area clean and tidy.

•Clear walkways
•Ladder and high level platform should be
secured against sliding; check before
using and set-up correctly.
For electrical handlings, switch off the
main source before any repairs, wear
appropriate protective gears, and follow
safety measures.
Chemical Application and Safety
Pesticides that are commonly used in
gardening include fungicides, bactericides and
nematicides (control diseases), insecticides,
and herbicides (control weeds).
Working with chemicals requires proper
training and the use of protective clothing and
appropriate gear like mask and gloves.

Make sure that chemical symbols and labels

are well understood. The word DANGER in the
product means it contains the highest hazard
potential and usually accompanied by the
word POISON.
The word WARNING means the product has a
moderate hazard potential while CAUTION means
the products have the least level of potential
hazard.
1. Harmful/Toxic- Can cause nausea, vomiting,
headache, dizziness, and breathing
discomfort.
2. Corrosive- burns to skin and eyes.
If breathed in, can cause burns to
the lining of the nose, throat, and
lungs.

3. Irritant – irritates to eyes, throat,

nose, and skin; may cause an allergy.
4. Flammable – vapors may lead
to fire even at room temperature.

5. Oxidizing – can cause fire.

6. Explosive – can explode when
exposed to heat, shocks, or
friction.
Safety Measures during Chemical Application
oStrictly follow the recommended dosage, the
mixing technique, and application
instructions.
oApply chemicals when the weather permits –
no storm and floods, wind is calm.
oMake a record of each treatment- date, name
of chemical applied, technique of application,
and to others,
oAs much as possible, choose effective and
economical chemicals that bring the safest
result.

Safety Measures during Storage and Disposal

Strictly follow the manufacturer’s storage and
disposal procedure.
Label all the chemicals.
Have separate storage area/room for
chemicals apart from other supplies with
proper temperature.
Seek guidance on how to dispose
containers and unused chemicals within
the community to prevent groundwater
contamination or you may bring these to
appropriate waste disposal site.
