UNIT 7

JOBS, WORK AND

STUDY
1. What skills and abilities do people most want to
have today? Why?

I would say most people today want to hone their interpersonal skills as well as public speaking
skills. Apart from educational background, these factors greatly influence one’s career path. As most
jobs involve interactions with co-workers and clients on a regular basis, building good relationships
with others will definitely help smooth out their work. In addition, people can easily get others’
attention with the ability to deliver compelling talks or presentations. This, in many ways, is later
beneficial to the job they are involved in.
2. Which skills should children learn at school? Are
there any skills which they should learn at home?
What are they?

Personally, I think the most important skill children need to learn is reading. It sounds
obvious as every child starts learning to read in the first days of school. Reading,
however, refers to a more complicated concept that requires children to read deeply, and
to truly comprehend hidden meanings behind each word. Being able to read well can
open the gateway to all knowledge. Besides academic skills, school is also the place for
children to learn how to socialise and make friends and be around other people.
At home, I consider independence as the key skill for every child. Once they learn to be
independent, they can manage themselves, be responsible for their own life, and wisely
figure out the solutions to their problems.
3. Which skills do you think will be
important in the future? Why?

I’m convinced it’ll be time management skills. Excellent time management skills are
closely associated with the competence to decide what our priorities are, then
efficiently distribute time to do each task. As people now are getting bombarded with
tons of deadlines and heavier workloads caused by the rapid pace of life, these skills
are essential to be able to stay on top of things.
In this unit you will learn how to:

• Use can, can't, could and couldn't
