THE SEXUAL
SELF
What is sexual self in
understanding the self?
Base in our Research

Sexual self-concept refers to the totality of

oneself as a sexual being, including positive and
negative concepts and feelings. According to
theorists, sexual self-concept is described well
along three dimensions (Snell & Papini, 1989):
sexual self-esteem, sexual depression, and
sexual preoccupation.
How does sexual self develop?

Identity Development

From the standpoint of sexual development, a

strong sense of self prepares an individual for
intimacy in young adulthood. As is true of all
aspects of identity development,
experimentation and role play are common
ways in which teens develop their sexual self-
concept.
Why is sexual self in understanding the
self important?

Your sexuality is central to your self-identity, and

not being able to express this is damaging to your
sense of self-worth and overall mental health. For
some, coming out leads to acceptance and support,
but this may not always be the case..
The 3 aspects of Sexual Self

Sexual self-esteem.
Sexual depression.
Sexual pre-occupation.
Sexual Self-Esteem

Gila Shipiro (a psychotherapist and

certified sex therapist) defines sexual
self-esteem as “the feelings you have
about your body and your confidence
level in how you relate intimately to
someone else”.
How do you build sexual self-
esteem?
What sexual confidence looks like

1. Believing you deserve pleasure. A sexually confident person

knows they're allowed to experience pleasure and joy.

2. Understanding and communicating your own sexual desires.

3. Understanding and listening to the person you're with.

4. Setting and accepting boundaries

Sexual Depression

In a person with depression, the sex-

related chemicals are out of balance.
As a result, sexual desire is low or
missing.
This type of depression happens due to being single
causing you to not stop masturbating/being horny. This
causes you to be highly depressed over not having any
sexual activity with someone else besides yourself.
Sexual Pre-Occupation

What does it mean to be sexually preoccupied?

The term. used in this article, sexual preoccupation, is

defined as sexual behavior that deviates. from
normative practice in terms of frequency and/or choice
of object and creates. domestic, occupational or legal
problems for the individual.
sexual preoccupation is measured by behavioral
criteria: having sex or masturbating four or more
times a week is considered a sign of sexual
preoccupation, especially if the sexual activities are
impersonal.
In Simple Terms

It's an excessive preoccupation with sexual

fantasies, urges or behaviors that is difficult to
control, causes you distress, or negatively affects
your health, job, relationships or other parts of
your life.
THE NEGATIVE PERCEPTIONS
ABOUT HIM OR HERSELF AS A
“SEXUAL BEING”

Others see themselves as they lack in self sexual

esteem they may feel jealous and burning desires
as they want to be a perfect sexual being that’s
what we call sexual self image issue that many
teenager thinks that they lack as a sexual being for
example:

Many research results found that women have the

most issues as sexual being twice than men because
women have the most misconception about their
selves as they always compare and compete with
others and these are the things they always
stumble upon growing; Obsessively thinking about
their body and appearance, Putting too much
emphasis their weight, shape or size.
Frequently comparing their body and appearance with
other people, Changes to their eating and exercise
behavior in an attempt to change their weight
or muscularity, Withdrawing from things they enjoy, like
sports and social activities, etc.
These are the things that women possess but also men
frequently have these issues but the majority goes to the
women which may result to:

1. Other mental health concerns such as depression or

anxiety.

2. Engaging in risky and harmful behaviors, such as

smoking, abusing substances, or increased sexual activity.

Just to feel competent, they will engage in harmful ways

such as said above.
THE LESSON
There’s a lesson in this topic that many of us might hear or read but ill say it
again being contented can be achieved by accepting your self and to start this
process is to know your flaws by knowing your flaws you know that your not a
perfect human that characteristics make you unique and because of this flaws
makes you as a human, there’s a saying that humans are not made perfect
because each human has flaws and uniqueness that makes them human. All
we can do is be proud of who we are and what we have as a person because
many of us can find happiness by accepting who and what we have.

Quote: There is no human born as a perfect being because to define a human there

is always a flaw in us because that makes us human. Only Gods can be so-called
perfect in terms of appearance or attitude.
