The sensory system detects signals from the
outside environment and communicates it to
the body via the nervous system. The sensory
system relies on specialized sensory receptor
cells that transduce external stimuli into
changes in membrane potentials.

MECHANORECE
PTORS
MECHANORECE
Mechanoreceptors are a type of
somatosensoryPTORS
receptors which
relay extracellular stimulus to
intracellular signal transduction
through mechanically gated ion
channels. The external stimuli are
usually in the form of touch,
pressure, stretching, sound waves,
and motion.

TOUCH: THE
SOMATOSENSO
RY SYSTEM
Somatosensation is the
sense of touch.
Somatosensation occurs
all over the exterior of
the body and at some
interior locations as
well.
MECHANOREC
EPTORS
SOUND: THE
AUDITORY
SYSTEM
Auditory stimuli are sound waves
that move through a medium, such as
air or water. Because sound waves
exert pressure, sound is detected by
mechanoreceptors.

MOVEMENT: THE
VESTIBULAR SYSTEM
The stimuli associated with the
vestibular system are linear
acceleration (gravity) and angular
acceleration and deceleration. In
vertebrates, gravity is detected
through head position. Angular
acceleration and deceleration are
expressed through turning or tilting of
the head.

TASTE: THE
GUSTATORY

Detecting a taste relies on
activation of specific
chemical receptors in taste
receptor cells (gustatory

An olfactory receptor
responds when it binds
certain molecules inhaled
from the environment by
sending impulses directly
to the olfactory bulb of the
brain.

Pain is the name given to
nociception. Pain is caused by
both true sources of injury and
also by harmless stimuli that
mimic the action of damaging
stimuli.

THERMORECEPT
OR
THERMORECEP
A thermoreceptor
TOR is a sensory receptor or, more
accurately, the receptive portion of a sensory
neuron that codes absolute and relative changes
in temperature, primarily within the innocuous
range. The adequate stimulus for a warm receptor
is warming, which results in an increase in their
action potential discharge rate; cooling results in
a decrease in warm receptor discharge rate.

ASSIGNM E NT

The sense organs allow us to

perceive the world. Hence, caring
for the sense organs is important.
Your assignment is, choose one
sensory organ and list down tips for
caring this organ.
Thank
Have a nice day!

you!
