Operating System

he software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing
applications, and controlling peripherals.
An operating system (OS) is the program that, after being initially loaded into the computer by a
boot program, manages all of the other application programs in a computer. The application
programs make use of the operating system by making requests for services through a defined
application program interface (API).
Programmers do not deal with hardware. They will always mainly focus on implementing software.
Therefore, a level of abstraction is supposed to be maintained. Operating systems provide a layer of
abstraction for using disk such as files.
Operating System as Resource Manager

A virtual machine works by emulating the operating system software on any computer hardware,
which is called hardware virtualization. These two necessary elements work together to give you the
freedom to run any operating system of your choosing at any given time, no matter what hardware you
have.

The operating system acts as a manager of the above resources and allocates them to specific programs
and users, whenever necessary to perform a particular task. Therefore the operating system is the
resource manager i.e. it can manage the resource of a computer system internally.
History
The first operating systems were developed in the 1950s, when computers could only run one
program at a time. Later in the following decades, computers began to include more and more software
programs, sometimes called libraries, that came together to create the start of today's operating
systems.
A real inventor':  Gary Kildall, father of the PC operating system, honored for key work.
