Chapter 1
Review
Characteristics of Civilization
The first characteristic of civilization is
advanced cities; a city is a center of trade for a
large population. Second, a civilization must
have specialized workers, such as artisans, who
have skills in a specific kind of work. Third, a
civilization needs complex institutions, like
government and religion, which are patterns of
organization. Fourth, a civilization must have
written records to keep track of things like
population, taxes, and laws. Finally, a
civilization needs to have technology, such as
the wheel or plow, to help meet people’s needs.
Causes and Effects of Neolithic Revolution
The Neolithic Revolution is when people learned
how to grow crops. This happened after the
climate changed making it warmer and drier. The
climate change meant that more food was available
and population grew. Eventually, people needed
new sources of food and learned how to grow
crops. One effect of the Neolithic Revolution was
that people no longer needed to be nomads, they
could live in settled villages. Also, the population
increased. Another effect was that the food supply
was more stable. In addition, people began to
domesticate animals for a source of meat.
