What is Family?
Family is the basic unit of Society and the
nucleus of our behavior.
It is made up of individuals who give extra
effort to work on each other’s total development:
Emotional
Cognitive
Physical
Social
Spiritual
What is Family?

It has various obligations to keep its


sanctity as a “basic, autonomous social
institution.”
The members of the family should be
able to work together to overcome the
challenges of life.
The family should be kindled with
permanent love and harmony.
Two Aspects of a "Home”

Physical - Refers to the residence of the


family, the “house”, together with every
material thing in it.

Spiritual – Homes are built not only of


material things but mostly of the abstract
things and this is the spiritual aspect of the
home.
Let us ask ourselves:

Do I have a house or
Home?
Three major stages of family cycle
The Beginning Family – the bride and the groom
profess undying love. This stage starts with the
marriage of a man and a woman. In this period, their
needs are only for the two of them.

The Expanding Family – This includes the daily


routine of family life. The parents’ role is to maintain
discipline to produce well-adjusted children. This stage
covers a longer period of time since it starts with the
birth of the first child and ends when the last child
leaves home.
Three major stages of Family
Cycle
The Contracting Family – this is
considered as the “empty nest” period.
The children leave home to start on
their own.
Classification of Families
(According to degree of authority)

Patriarchal Family – The father is the head


and the sole authority in the home.
Matriarchal Family – the mother possesses
the authority figure.
Egalitarian family – both husband and wife
exercises authority over concerns of family
life. The family as a whole faces the problems
that may arise. This is the democratic way.
Classification of Families
(According to Structural Organization)

Nuclear family – is composed of


husband, wife, and their children.

Extended family – is composed of


husband, wife, their children and
relatives on both sides.

Pre-colonial Filipino Family
The early Filipino divided their inherited
property equally among the male and female
children, and there was work training for both
boys and girls in the family.
With regards to the education of the children,
there was equal opportunity for both sexes.
There is a general consensus that filipino wives
the were treated as companions, not slaves.
Pre-colonial Filipino Family
The married woman not only
exercised an equal share in the
earning of livelihood in the family;
she appeared to have the key role
as well in the economic stability of
the family.
The Filipino Family during the Spanish
Period

the Filipino woman was restricted by the


rule seclusion during the spanish period. She
was expected to spend her time in useful
hardwork – cooking, praying looking after
the maids, and managing the household.

The duties of Husband and wife
The husband is to gain property and the woman is to
manage and take care of it.
The husband is to go out and earn a living and the
woman is to take care of the house.
The husband is to look for money and the woman is to
spend it wisely.
The husband is to deal with all and the woman to
speak with few.
The husband is to protect honor and the woman to
pride herself in being honorable. ]
The woman then was the personification of
the doncella educated by the Spanish friar to
be sweet, docile, obedient, and self sacrificing.
