Horst P Horst Photographer

Analysis
About him
Horst P Horst is German – American fashion photographer. Horst
attended the Bauhaus School founded by Walter Gropius to learn
design and construction skills before relocating to Paris to serve as an
apprentice to architect Le Corbusier. He crossed paths with French
Vogue's top photographer, George Hoyningen-Huene, in Paris. Horst's
tutor Huene introduced him to the Parisian artistic scene in the 1930s.
Horst is now known for his fashion photographs and his photographs of
patterns. The particular image I am interested in is called patterns of
nature and it is from the sunshine magazine of 1949.
Visual Qualities
The photograph shows the same symmetrical image
multiplied and rotated to create a bigger image of patterns.
The main focus of the image the section that I have outlined
as that is the part that has been flipped, moved and rotated
multiple times. I like the image because it is very unique and
because it has been made incredibly well despite the fact that
this image is nearly 80 years old. Some composition styles
used are framing, leading lines and symmetry. The lighting in
the image is natural. There is no artificial light in the photo.
Some of the formal elements used pattern, lines and shape.
Horst P Horst has achieved his message of creating images
that transcend time by using a small section of an image and
making it one large symmetrical picture.
Camera Settings
The camera has been focused all over the image. There is no particular
part of the image which has been focused on more. Horst P Horst has
used a high aperture to get the whole image in focus. Horst P Horst has
also used a high shutter speed to create a still, sharp image. In my own
work, I would like to create patterns as symmetrical and as unique.
