FINDING THE VOLUME
OF SOLID FIGURES
Prepared by: Airvin Jay A. Catalino
Lesson 1
Finding the Volume of a Rectangular Prism and
Pyramid
Prism
Prism is a solid (three dimensional)
geometrical objects. It is an example of a
polyhedron – solid objects with polygonal
shape surfaces.
Rectangular Prism
It is a solid object consisting of two congruent
(similar in shape and equal in size) polygonal
faces with their identical edges connected by
rectangles.
Volume of Rectangular Prism
Example 1: Find the volume of rectangular steel box at the right
Solution
The steel box at the right is rectangular prism.
Using the formula: V= l ⚫ w ⚫ h
V= l ⚫ w ⚫ h
V= (5cm) x (10cm) x (2cm)
V= 50 c x 2cm
V= 100 c
Thus, the volume of the steel box is 100 c

Application and Problem Solving
Example 2: How many cubic meters of water is needed to fill a
pool with a dimension of 5 meters long, 4 meters wide and 1.5
meters deep.
Understand:
a. What is asked?
The volume of a pool
b. What are the given facts?
A pool with a dimension of 5 meters long, 4 meters
wide and 1.5 meters’ deep
Plan:
The pool takes the form of a rectangular prism. Using the
formula, V= l ⚫ w ⚫ h, we have:
Solve:
V= l ⚫ w ⚫ h
V= (5m) x (4m) x (1.5m)
V= 20 x 1.5m
V= 30
Answer: Thus, the pool needs 30 of water to be filled.
Example 3: How many cubic meters of air is needed to fill a
cubical tank with a side that measures 4 meters?
Understand:
a. What is asked?
The volume of a cubical tank.
b. What are the given facts?
A tank whose sides are 4 meters
Plan:
• The tank takes the form of a cube. It is also a prism that has
equal sides. Using the formula, V= l ⚫ w ⚫ h, we can derive the
formula of cube as, V=s x s x s or V=
Solve:
V= s x s x s or
V= (4m) x (4m) x (4m)
V= 16 x 4m
V= 64
Answer: Thus, the tank needs 64 of air to be filled.
Pyramid
Pyramid is also a polyhedron, with a polygonal base and a point
(called the apex) connected by triangles extending from the edges. A
pyramid has only one apex, but the number of vertices is dependent
on polygonal base.
Volume of Pyramid
V=lxwxh
V = 3 in x 2 in x 12 in
V = 6 x 12 in
V = 72
SOLUTION
V=lxwxh÷3
V = 6 cm x 7 cm x 10 cm ÷ 3
V = 42 x 10 cm ÷ 3
V = 420 ÷ 3
V = 140
SOLUTION
Solve:
V=sxsxs
V=7mx7mx7m
V = 49 x 7 m
V = 343
SOLUTION
Solve :
V=lxwxh
V = 30 cm x 45 cm x 72 cm
V = 1,350 x 72 cm
V = 97,200
SOLUTION
Solve:
V=lxwxh÷3
V = 5 cm x 7 cm x 4 cm ÷ 3
V = 35 x 4 cm ÷ 3
V = 140 ÷ 3
V = 46.67
Let us Remember!
Volume is the amount of space inside the solid figure. It is measured in
cubic units. It tells you how many cubes of a given size it takes to fill the
solid figure.
Volume of prism is the product of the length, the width and the height (h).
𝑉=𝑙∙𝑤∙ℎ
Volume of a pyramid is of the product of length, width and height.
𝑉 = ∙ 𝑙 ∙ 𝑤 ∙ ℎ or 𝑉 = 𝑙 ∙ 𝑤 ∙ ℎ ÷ 3
ACTIVITY
Solve the following problems.
1. A swimming pool in the shape of a right rectangular prism is 8 feet
deep. The top of the swimming pool has an area of 120 square feet.
What is the volume, in cubic feet, of swimming pool?
V=lxwxh
V = 3 cm x 4 cm x 15 cm
V = 12 x 15 cm
V = 180
SOLUTION
V=sxsxs
V = 12 m x 12 m x 12 m
V = 144 x 12 m
V = 1,728
SOLUTION
V=lxwxh÷3
V = 10 cm x 10 cm x 12 cm ÷ 3
V = 100 x 12 cm ÷ 3
V = 1,200 ÷ 3
V = 400
