MMC (METAL MATRIX

COMPOSITES)
• Conventional monolithic materials
have limitations in achieving good
combination of strength, stiffness,
toughness and density.
• To overcome these shortcomings
and to meet the ever increasing
demand of modern day technology.
INTRODUCTION composites are most promising
materials of recent interest.
• Metal matrix composites (MMCS)
possess significantly improved
properties including high specific
strength; specific modulus, damping
capacity and good wear resistance
compared to unreinforced alloys.
• A metal matrix composite
(MMC) is a composite material
with at least two constituent
METAL parts, one being a metal.
MATRIX • The other material may be a
different metal or another
COMPOSITES material, such as a ceramic or
(MMCs) oragnic compound.
• When at least three materials
are present, it is called a
hybrid composite.
Most IMPORTANT
MMC System
• Aluminium matrix
• Continuous fibres: boron, silicon carbide,
alumina, graphite
• Discontinuous fibres: alumina, alumina-silica
• Whiskers: silicon carbide
• Particulates: silicon carbide, boron carbide
• Magnesium matrix
• Particulates: titanium carbide-Copper matrix
Higher Fire resistance Higher transverse
temperature stiffness and
capability strength

ADVANTAGES No moisture Higher electrical Better radiation

absorption and thermal resistance
conductivities

Fabric ability of MMCs with

whisker and conventional
particulate- metalworking
reinforced equipment.
DISADVANTAGES
• Higher cost of some material systems.
• Relatively immature technology.
• Complex fabrication methods for
fiber-reinforced systems (except for
casting).
• Difficult to produce intricate shapes
• Poor fatigue properties.
• Low energy efficiency.
• Temperatures dependent effect.
• Diesel engine piston.
• Engine piston.
• Cylinder liners.
APPLICATION • Brake Drums.
• Brake Rotors.
• Drive shafts
APPLICATION
• Metal matrix composites offer
sufficient promise and have reached
the degree of maturity that indicates
an expansion of their use.
• To realize their full potential
however these composites deserve
greater attention and support.
CONCLUSION • The numbers of MMCs currently are
in various stages of development
• The boron aluminum system is in
most advanced stage of
development and properly data for
this system are sufficient for design
in structural application
Ceramic Matrix
Composite :-
• In materials science ,
ceramic matrix
composites (CMCs) are a
subgroup of composite
Introduction materials and a subgroup
of ceramics. They consist of
ceramic fibres embedded
in a ceramic matrix.
• High thermal shock & creep
resistance.
• High temp resistance.
• Excellent resist to corrosion
Properties • High tensile and compressive
strength.
• light weight due to reduced
density
• Ceramic don't react with
chemical
• low density of thermal &
electrical conductivity
Advantages

Polymer Matrix
Composites(PMC)
Introduction
• PMC is the material consisting of a

• Thermoset - Rigid three-
dimensional network (Chain
may be linear or branched) Ex.
Polyester.
• Thermoplastic- Flexible linear
Types chains Ex. Polyethylene

Thermoplastic or lightly cross
linked thermosets cross of
spring like molecules Ex.
Natural Rubber
• low maximum working
