1.3 Present Simple

Present simple
Spelling of the third person singular:

1. The most common way of making the third person singular is by


adding –s to the base form of the verb.
cooks eats makes thinks sits swims shops lives comes sings
2. If the verb ends in consonant + -y, the –y changes to –ies [hurry →
hurries, copy → copies]. We do not change –y after a vowel [stay →
stays, enjoy → enjoys].
3. After –s, -sh, -ch, -x we add -es /IZ/ [pass → passes, wash →
washes, catch → catches, mix → mixes].
4. Some verbs ending in –o have –es [go → goes, do → does].

1.3 Present Simple
Use

1. We use the present simple for facts, states, things staying the
same, things that are true for a long time [I live in Belgrade].

2. Thoughts and feelings [I think so; I like him].

3. Repeated actions [We see each other every day].

4. Programmes and timetables [The fast train leaves at 7.39 and gets
in to London at 8.45.] Used like this, the present simple can refer to
the future.
