WILFs
Linking energy
• State principle of conservation of energy
• Link work done to energy transferred
• Calculate the speed for a falling object
• Calculate the height of a thrown object
Starter
1) What is the equation for kinetic energy?
2) What is the equation for gravitational energy?
3) What is the equation for work done?
Play and think

Energy transfers
Task:
• Pick the intro simulation
• Select the bar graph
• Put skater at top of ramp

Think>pair>share
1) What happens to her energy as
she goes up and down?
2) What do you notice about her
total energy?
Answer
Her energy changes from kinetic to
potential but the total amount (kinetic +
potential) remains the same

Principle of conservation of energy

• Energy can not be made or
destroyed
• Energy can be transferred
• Basically energy changes into
different types but the total
amount in and out remains the
same
• The diagram shows how much
energy becomes the different
types (the width of the arrows
shows you the amount)

All energy is linked

• Work done is the same as the energy transferred

Falling objects
• Gravitational potential energy all gets turned into kinetic
energy when an object falls
• Assuming there is no energy loss this can be used to
calculate the speed of the falling object
• BUT nothing is 100% efficient so there will be energy
loss which results in a real speed of less than the
calculated one

Falling objects example

A roller coaster carriage rises to a height of 80m. Each carriage has a mass
of 70kg
1) Calculate the gain in gravitational potential energy
GPE = m x g x h
GPE = 70x 10 x 80
GPE = 56000J

2) Calculate the maximum possible speed the carriage will reach at the
bottom
GPE = KE = 56000J

 3) Explain why the actual speed is less

Work is done against friction causing some kinetic energy to be transferred to heat

Falling objects
Task:
1) Go to Falling objects example document in
Schoology
2) Right click copy and paste into your google
document (so you don’t have to write it out!)

Throwing objects
• All kinetic energy turns into gravitational potential
so the height of the object can be found
• Again the calculated height will be higher than the
real amount as in reality there is energy loss

Throwing objects example

A ball is thrown with a speed of 4m/s into the air. It has a mass of 3kg
1) Calculate the balls kinetic energy

2) Calculate the height the ball goes (assume g =10 N/kg)

KE= GPE = 24J

Work done
• Work done is also linked to kinetic energy and
gravitational energy
• So you can calculate work done and use this to
find speed and height
