Subject Re: New Year Celebration

Dear Li Chen,
I hope you enjoyed your holiday. My family and I celebrate new year differently. I would love to tell you
all about it!
New Year is one of the most exciting festivals there is. My family and I look forward to celebrating it
every year. New Year's is celebrated as a two-part holiday. New Year’s Eve, which falls on December 31st, is
the first part of the holiday, and New Year’s Day, which falls on January 1st of the following year, is the second
part of the holiday. On both days, we would gather with all our relatives and have large feasts. We usually
spend the whole day of new year’s eve decorating, cooking and occasionally, watching movies in the living
room with our cousins. The adults will also gather and drink alcoholic beverages. When it’s almost midnight,
we will bring out the firecrackers and confetti and do the countdown. I personally love this part of the
celebration because the countdown is a part of welcoming the new year. Plus, its tradition!
On New Year’s, if we spend the night at our grandparents’ we would all wake up early and have a large
breakfast. My grandmother and aunts will prepare various dishes and they will all be in large platters. A must-
have is steam buns with kaya and large pots of tea. After that, we will dress up in our best outfits and explore
the city. That concludes my new year celebration with my family!
Do tell me more about your experiences too. I am sure you have lots to tell. I look forward to hearing
from you soon!

Cheers!
Ruby

Each year, more deaths occur because of flash flood than any other natural disasters.
The most common flood deaths occur is when a vehicle is driven into hazardous
floodwater. Here are steps to stay safe during a flash flood.

First of all, pay attention to changing weather and flood conditions. Listen to alerts and
warnings of flood. When flood is about to happen, be prepared to move to higher ground.
If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, you should be prepared to evacuate. Follow
evacuation orders from your local police or fire department. When evacuating your home,
take only essential items and your pets. It is also wise to carry a first aid kit. A first-aid kit
helps you handle the medical emergencies as quickly as possible, especially during a
flood. If you are not careful, you could get hurt or even catch a cold. Besides that, do
gather emergency supplies, non-perishable food and water. Store at least 1 gallon of
water per day for each person and each pet. This is because you may not be able to have
access to clean water during a flood. Another thing to remember is to take precautions for
your home. Do not forget to turn off all utilities at the main power switch and close the
main gas valve. Apart from that, do unplug sensitive electronic equipment. But, do not
touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. If possible, do this before
flooding occurs.
7
After flooding occurs, avoid driving through flooded areas and standing water.
This is because it can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Cars can be swept
away in only two feet of moving water. If your vehicle is trapped in rapidly moving water,
stay in the vehicle. If the water is rising inside the vehicle, seek refuge on the roof.

In conclusion, these six safety rules listed in this essay are meant to help you stay
safe during flash flood. Always prioritize safety for yourself and your loved ones when
facing a natural disaster, such as flood.
