CRITIQUE PAPER

A CRITIQUE PAPER IS AN ACADEMIC WRITING GENRE THAT

SUMMARIZES AND GIVES A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF A CONCEPT
OR WORK. OR, TO PUT IT SIMPLY, IT IS NO MORE THAN A SUMMARY
AND A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF A SPECIFIC ISSUE. THIS TYPE OF
WRITING AIMS TO EVALUATE THE IMPACT OF THE GIVEN WORK OR
CONCEPT IN ITS FIELD.
• a formal analysis and evaluation of a text, production, or
performance—either one's own (a self-critique) or someone else's. In
composition, a critique is sometimes called a response paper. When
written by another expert in the field, a critique can also be called a peer
review.
• CRITIQUES ARE AN IMPORTANT RHETORICAL PATTERN IN ACADEMIC
WRITING AS THEY PRESENT A BALANCED VIEW OF THINGS. CRITIQUES,
HOWEVER, ARE BASED NOT ONLY ON PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE BUT
SHOULD BE GROUNDED ON ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS.
TIPS TO DEVELOP YOUR CRITIQUE PAPER:

1.REMEMBER THAT THE CRITIQUE SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO THE AUDIENCE.

THEREFORE, PROVIDING BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR THE READERS WILL
BE HELPFUL. INCLUDING THE CENTRAL IDEAS OF TFHE BOOK, THE CONCEPT, THE
EVENT, OR THE MOVIE TO BE CRTIQUED IS NECESSARY.
2. RELATING YOUR CRITIQUE TO GREATER REALITIES WILL ALSO HELP AS YOU
GROUND YOUR CRITIQUE ON THE WIDER SCHEME OF THINGS. FOR INSTANCE,
WHAT SUBJECT/THEME DOES THE MOVIE, CONCEPT, BOOK, OR EVENT ADDRESS?
ARE THERE QUESTIONS THAT PEOPLE CONSTANTLY ASK THAT THIS PARTICULAR
SUBJECT/ THEME YOU ARE REVIEWING CAN ANSWER?
CHARACTERISTICS OF CRITIQUE PAPER

• describe: give the reader a sense of the writer's overall purpose and intent.
• analyze: examine how the structure and language of the text convey its meaning.
• interpret: state the significance or importance of each part of the text.
• assess: make a judgment of the work's worth or value.
PURPOSE OF CRITIQUE PAPER

• The purpose for writing a critique is to evaluate somebody's work (a book, an
essay, a movie, a painting...) in order to increase the reader's understanding
of it. A critical analysis is subjective writing because it expresses the writer's
opinion or evaluation of a text.
PARTS OF CRITIQUE PAPER:

• Introduction.
•  Summary.
•  Critique.
• Conclusion.
INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY

• The introduction should include the author's name, the name of the article, its source and
the thesis or main point of the article.
• The summary states the overall scope of the work you are studying, or the
author's purpose and the main points of the work. Use your own words to
summarize rather than the author's exact words. Do not offer any opinions in this
section.
CONCLUSION OF CRITIQUE PAPER

• Summarize the key points in the article, as well the key points
from your own analysis. Close with a comment about the significance
of the research or a statement of future research needed in the field.
• Conclusion. This is usually a very brief paragraph, which includes: a
statement indicating the overall evaluation of the work. a summary
of the key reasons, identified during the critical evaluation, why this
evaluation was formed.
