INTRODUCTION
What is TOEFL ITP?
ITP stands for Institutional Test Program. It is a paper-based TOEFL test certified by the
ETS (Educational Testing Service, USA) with minimum score 460 and maximum score
677. It is widely-used in Indonesia and totally different from EPT although the format is
the same. EPT is the “Fake TOEFL” that most universities use to test their prospective
students. EPT can not be taken as the legal TOEFL test standard due to its “Fake” and
“Insecure” quality.
There are 3 sections:
1. Listening: 50 test questions: Part A short conversation 30 questions Part B Longer Conversations and C
long talk 20 Questions
2. Structure and Written Expression: 40 test questions (the most difficult)
3. Reading Comprehension: 50 test questions
WHY COLLEGES REQUIRE TOEFL
ITP?
There are 3 prominent reasons why you are required to take this test for your college
admission:
1. Commonly in the first and in the second semester you will learn Academic English in both
Regular and International Classes.
2. More and more majors in Top-Ranked Universities use English textbooks in both Regular and
International Classes, so you need to master Academic English to perceive their contents more
easily.
3. All senior students must possess another TOEFL ITP test as one of the requirements before they
graduate.

MASTERING SECTION 2 ON TOEFL ITP
Section 2 on TOEFL ITP is designed to measure your ability to recognize
language that is appropriate for standard written Academic English (as
obtaining this mastery is needed to support both your Academic Writing
and Academic Speaking Skills on TOEFL iBT as well as on IELTS). In
Section 2 , there are 40 test problems on the TOEFL ITP divided by 2 types:
1. Structure : 15 questions, in “Structure” you need to complete a sentence.
2. Written Expression: 25 questions, in “Written Expression” you need to find
a mistake in a sentence
Total time is 25 minutes
STEP 1: MASTER PARTS OF SPEECH

What is Part of Speech?


The part of speech indicates how the word functions in
meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence.
There are seven parts of speech in the English language:
noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition,
conjunction; You need to master if you want to earn 680 of
your TOEFL ITP section 2
STEP 2 : BE WELL-VERSED IN PERCEIVEING THE
DIFFERENCES OF PHRASES, CLAUSES AND SENTENCES

1. Phrases
A phrase is a group of words which does not have a subject and a verb, it can include a group of part of speech too and
they are called as: Noun Phrase, Adjective Phrase, Verb Phrase
Examples: Learning English, Interested in, Go to
2. Clauses
A clause is a group of words that has a verb and a subject. There are 2 common clauses in English: Dependent and
Independent. Dependent is also commonly called as Subordinate Clause, while Independent is called as Main Clause
When Jon was admitted to Harvard Business School on Scholarship (Dependent Clause)
He could not be happier (Independent Clause)
3. Sentences
A sentence is a group of words that consists of a subject and a verb, can be extended by using phrases, clauses as long as
it is complete. An Independent clause is a sentence as well.
When Jon was admitted to Harvard Business School on Scholarship, He could not be happier.
STEP 3: BE WELL-VERSED IN PERCEIVING THE
DIFFERENCES OF PASSIVE AND ACTIVE
Active-Passive in tenses:
Active : My mom bought the book (Simple Past)
Passive: The book was bought by my mom
Active : My mom has bought the book (Present Perfect)
Passive: The book has been bought by my mom
Active-Passive in modals:
Active : My mom must buy the book (Must as the modal)
Passive: The book must be bought by my mom
STEP 4: MASTER TYPES OF SENTENCES

4. Compound-Complex Sentence
4.1. SIMPLE SENTENCE
A simple sentence must have a single clause (a single verb)
which is independent, and it cannot take another clause.
Examples:
• Puput always wanted to become a writer. (One clause – one verb)
• Ahimsa is going to be the future world-class Industrial Engineer (One
clause – one verb)
• Ega eventually got her scholarship (One clause – one verb)
4.2. COMPOUND SENTENCE
A compound sentence must have more than one independent clause with
no dependent clauses. Some coordinate conjunctions, punctuations, or
both are used to join together these clauses.
Examples:
• Puput always wanted to become a writer, and Her friend wanted to
become a doctor. (Two independent clauses – two verbs)
• Ega eventually got her scholarship from IFA Turkey, but Ahimsa got
his scholarship from Fontys. (Two independent clauses – two verbs)
4.3. COMPLEX SENTENCE
A complex sentence also has more than one clause but of one them must be an
independent clause and the other/others must be (a) dependent clause(es). There
are also some particular connectors for the clauses of a complex sentence to be
connected.
Examples:
• I know that Puput always wanted to be a writer. (Here, a dependent clause is
followed by a connector and an independent clause.)
• Chelsea could not fly to Japan because she got Covid-19. ((Here, a dependent
clause is followed by a connector and an independent clause.)
4.4. COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE
A compound-complex sentence (or complex–compound sentence) is a mixture
of the features of compound and complex sentences in one sentence. So, it
must contain at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent
clause.
Example:
• I know that Puput always wanted to become a writer, but her mom
unfortunately disagreed with her idea. (Here, one dependent clause is
followed by a complex connector and two independent clauses with a
compound conjunction between them.)

1. Noun Clause
Basic pattern of a Noun positioned in the Sentence

A noun clause is a clause that functions as a noun, since in the sentence the
function of a noun is as a subject or as an object. Connectors: That, Where,
What, Why, How and many more
Example:
• That Puput wanted to become a writer made her mom sad
• I know that Puput wanted to become a writer
2. Adjective Clause
Basic pattern of an Adjective positioned in the Sentence
Marsha bought an exclusive purse
An adjective Clause is a clause that describes the noun. Connectors:
That, Which, Who and some more

Adjective Clause Reduced
When you do the TOEFL there are more than 5 numbers of Adjective Clause may
come up regularly., and some of them are Adjective Clause Reduced. When you are
in college there is uncountable Adjective Clause showing up in your college
textbooks so you definitely need to master it excellently as well, if you want to
perceive your textbook contents.
Examples:
The student who are preparing a series of internship programs is Ahimsa
The student who talked talking on the phone to Ms. Mathilda last night was Ahimsa
One of Internship programs which is taken by Ahimsa is focusing on Logistics
3. Adverb Clause
Basic pattern of an Adverb positioned in the Sentence
Dhania definitely knows Mr. Harris.
Farrel always takes his courses seriously
She is absolutely gorgeous
An Adverb Clause is a group of words that functions as an adverb, there are: time,
cause, condition, contrast, manner, place, etc with connectors: before, since, because, if,
although, where and many more
• Ahimsa must accomplish a series of his internship programs before he starts his full time
job at Phillips
• By the time Ahimsa will have accomplished a series of internship programs, he will
soon start his full-time job at Phillips.
Adverb Clause Reduced
Similar to Adjective Clause, when you do the TOEFL there are more than 5 numbers of Adverb
Clause may come up regularly., and some of them are Adverb Clause Reduced. When you are in
college there is uncountable Adverb Clause showing up in your college textbooks so you
definitely need to master it excellently as well, if you want to perceive your textbook contents.
