Aboriginal tribes
About 400 Aboriginal tribes live in Australia.
Often referred to as “Aborigines”.
Legally referred to as “Aboriginals” and “Torres Strait Islanders”.
One of the oldest continuous populations outside of Africa.
History
• In 1788 native population was about 300k.
• About 300 different aboriginal languages spoken.
• New diseases, violence, racism and oppression
devastated the aboriginal societies after its
colonization.
• Currently aboriginal people account for 3% of the
Australian population.
• 75 aboriginal languages remain.
Traditions and
lifestyle
• Most live in nomadic societies.
• Invented the “boomerang” and “woomera” for hunting
purposes.
• Invented a musical instrument called the “didgeridoo”.
• “Dreaming” helps explain the Aboriginal way of life and their
world around them.
• Aboriginal body painting is an ancient tradition which carries
deep spiritual significance for the Australian indigenous
people.
National Sorry
Day
• First held on 26 May 1998.
• Held to remember and commemorate the mistreatment of
Australia’s indigenous population.
• “Stolen generation” – Aboriginal children taken from their parents by
the Australian government.
