JESUS FOUNDS

HIS CHURCH
The Church is born out of God’s plan to raise up men
to share in his divine Life.
He gathers disciples and from them, He chooses
twelve, with Peter as head.
Jesus has given the disciples the power to teach,
sanctify, rule and guide the members of the church.
THE TWELVE APOSTLES OF JESUS
JESUS FOUNDS

HIS CHURCH
Peter as Rock. At Simon’s confession of Jesus as the
Son of the living God, Jesus declares to Simon: You
are Rock, and upon this rock I will build my Church…
“Rock” is translated in Greek as “Petros”.
When Jesus changes Simon’s name to Peter, it
signifies
JESUS FOUNDS

HIS CHURCH

to Peter with the Church.
The new name Peter, indicates that Simon is the firm
foundation on which Jesus intends to build His
Church.
Peter is appointed as the leader or head of the
Church.
JESUS FOUNDS

HIS CHURCH
Jesus entrusts to Peter the keys of the kingdom of
heaven which stand for the spiritual power to be
exercised over the life of God’s people, the Church.
Peter is to be the keeper of the keys, the one who has
power to open and close, to bind and to loose, and
to forbid

A PROFESSION OF
ATONING LOVE
Jesus calls Peter to a Threefold profession of atoning
love by asking three times the question: “Simon, son
of John, do you love me?”
With every response of Peter with a yes, Jesus tells
him to take care of His people.
A PROFESSION OF
ATONING LOVE
The nature of Peter’s leadership is further defined by
the word from which tend is taken.
This word means to govern, guard, and attend.
Thus, Peter’s leadership is one of both service and
authority over the flock of Jesus.

LOVING JESUS
Whenever we read or listen to the word of God, we must
stop for a moment and think that it is God, Himself, who is
speaking to us. It is God who wants to speak to us and
explain the present situation of society and its people. It is
God who wants to tell us how to apply His word in our
daily life experiences. Through the Gospel, God tells us
how to benefit from His saving message.
