Social Case Work
• It’s not difficult; it’s different than what you did before. Just try
it enough!

- You do your best in every class, in every situation (exam, quiz,
participation, presentation etc).

- Be a good team player/student (?).
• Respect yourself and everyone around you.
o Never miss a game (class) unless you have to.
o Most Important: Enjoy it!
Exprience Matters!
• Every social problem is the outcome of many
external and internal factors. Therefore, when we
deal with an individual’s problems we also have to
deal with his reactions and experiences towards the
problems.
• Besides, proper recognition of individuality is
essential with regard to the solution of a problem.
• In the field of social work, the main task of social
worker is to develop self-direction and self-
dependence in an individual
• The focus of case work is on the individual.
• As a method of social work, it undertakes a very careful
observation of the individual and his problem.
Definition;
• Social case work is primarily related with the psychosocial
problems, it consists of the study of mental, emotional and
social factors.
• H.H Perlman defines case work as a process used by certain
human welfare agencies to help individual to cope more
effectively with their problems in social functioning.
• She adds that the nucleus of case work event is this: a person
with a problem comes to a place where a professional
representative helps him by a given process.
Thus, we find the following elements in case
work;
– Person (client)
– Problem
– Place (agency)
– Process
– Professional representative

Assumptions
• The following are the main assumptions in all the accepted
definitions.
(1) The individual and society are inter dependent.
(2) social forces influence behavior and attitudes
(3) problems are psychosocial; they have inner and outer
aspects
(4) problems are inter personal that is more than one person
is likely to be involved in the treatment of the individual
(5) the client is a responsible participant at every stage in the
solution of his problems
(6) the worker- client relationship is also used to
achieve the ends of treatment,
(7) it is also assumed that the worker will have to
enable the client to release his own capacities for
change and growth
(8) only when the worker is well grounded
psychologically, he can help the client to mobilize
his feelings in the direction of growth and
adaptation to reality.
Values in social casework
The social casework profession is focused on one primary goal: "to
enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of
all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment
of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty."
