Research Methodology
Research Ethics:
As researchers we are unable to conduct our
projects successfully if we do not receive the
help of other people. If we expect them to give
up their valuable time to help us, it follows that
we should offer them something in return.
Many people are willing to disclose a lot of
personal information during our research so we
need to make sure that we treat both the
participants and the information they provide
with honesty and respect. This is called research
ethics.
Overt and covert research:
Overt research means that it is open, out in the
public and that everyone knows who you are and
what you are doing.
Covert research means that you are doing it under
cover, that no one knows you are a researcher or
what you are doing.
Covert research should be kept to a minimum –
(there are enough journalists and television
personalities doing this kind of undercover,
sensationalist work).
When you need data from people or
organizations show the following:
Details of who you are (student and course or employee
and position).
Details of the organization for which you work or at
which you study.
Information about who has commissioned/funded the
research, if relevant.
Information about your project – subject and purpose.
Details about what will happen to the results.
Information about the personal benefits to be gained by
taking part in the project. Optional).
Code of research ethics:
This usually include the following subtitles:
– anonymity.
– confidentiality.
– right to comment.
– the final report.
– Data Protection.
(this according to the British ethics act)
Code of research ethics:
Usually researchers prepare an ethic sheet to be
distributed to the participants which can include
and show the following.
