DESCRIPTION
Let's see a small description of what it
is Extreme Ironing.

• Extreme ironing is an adrenaline


sport which combines the thrill of an
extreme outdoor activity with the
satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.
• Extreme ironing can take place
anywhere under the sky and borrows
disciplines from other extreme
sports, such as rock climbing, skiing,
scuba diving, sky diving and running.

HISTORY
Let's find out a little more about the
origin of this curious sport.
• The sport of extreme ironing was introduced
by Tony Hiam in the year of 1980, in Yorkshire
Dales National Park, near Settle, England.
Although some referred that extreme ironing
was originated in 1997 by Phil Shaw in
Leicester, England.
• In June 1999, Shaw started promoting the
activity with a nickname "Steam". He did this
purposely during the international tours so that
most of the people could connect with him.

EQUIPMENTS
How can you practice? What are the
equipment?

• The equipment is not many, the


ironing board is needed, and the
clothes are also required according
to what you are going to do if it is in
the air, you need a parachute. If it is
underwater, you need extra oxygen;
if you do it in the mountains, you
need appropriate clothing for
climbing and the cold.

RULES
You might not think so but this sport
has rules. Which are they?
• The board must be 1-meter long and 30
centimetres wide, and the board must
have legs. The next rule is you are not
allowed to use a plastic iron. It must be a
real one. Next, the garment you use to
iron must be at least the size of a tea
towel. And lastly, it must take place
outdoors.

COMPETITIONS
Let's look at championships and world
records.

• In 2002, the first Extreme Ironing


World Championship was organized
in which 12 teams from various
countries participated to become the
champion of extreme ironing.

WORLD RECORDS
Let's look at the highest records in this
sport.
• This was the first record in the highest altitude of
5,440 meters above the sea level.
• A new world record was set in March 2008,
when a team comprising 72 divers at the same
time ironed the clothes underwater. Later in
2009, the record was broken by a group of 86
divers.
• On March 28, 2011, the Dutch diving club De
Waterman officially set a world record of extreme
ironing underwater. The team of 173 divers
performed the task in an indoor swimming pool.

FUN FACTS
Let's look at some fun and curious
facts.
• Tony Hiam, who introduced Extreme Ironing,
got the idea from his brother-in-law John
Slater, who used to iron clothes in a tent
during camping activities.
• A famous documentary Extreme Ironing:
Pressing for Victory, was telecast on Wag TV
and was produced by Britain’s Channel 4.
• A group from South Africa won the 2003
Rowenta Trophy. They performed their task of
ironing at the Wolfberg Cracks across a gorge.
• Extreme ironing inspires extreme cello
playing, where the participants play their cello
instrument in extremely harsh and
inhospitable conditions.

CONCLUSION
Extreme ironing is interesting. Extreme
sport's inherent opposition to the
tedious activity of ironing creates a very
comical scenario.
If you want to practice it's easy, all you
need is an iron, an ironing board and
some clothes. As a good beginner, we
suggest you start in the backyard
before heading to more extreme places
like mountain slopes, woods or public
areas.
