Lesson 1

Absolute Value of a
Number
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to

● accurately plot integers on a number line;

● correctly determine the absolute value of integers;

● correctly order integers from least to greatest and

vice versa; and
● correctly solve real-life problems involving absolute
value.
Essential Questions

● How will you determine the absolute value of integers?

● How is the knowledge of absolute value important in

solving operations on integers?

Guide Questions

● What is the absolute value of a number?

● How is the absolute value of a number related to its

distance from zero?

● What symbol do we use to represent the absolute value?

Learn about It!

Absolute Value
1 the distance of a number from zero; usually denoted by the symbol , where is any
positive or negative number

Example:
Try It!

Example 1: What is ?
Try It!

Example 1: What is ?

Solution: The integer is eight units away from zero.

Thus, .

Example 2: Which has a greater value, or ?

Try It!

Example 2: Which has a greater value, or ?

Solution: Even without the use of a number line, we can

identify that is ten units away from zero and is eight units
away from zero. That is,

Since is greater than , we can say that .
Let’s Practice!

Individual Practice:

1. Compare the two integers using the symbols, , , or

2. Order the values from least to greatest.

Let’s Practice!

Group Practice: To be done in groups of three.

Two buses, and , left the station at the same time and
travelled at different speed in opposite directions. After one
hour, bus was 20 kilometers to the left of the bus station and
bus was 24 kilometers to the right of the station. Represent
the given information in absolute values and find the
distance between bus and bus .
