CRITICISM
A CRITICAL APPROACH TO LITERATURE
An archetypal critic would also say that the recurring patterns in literature
prove that there are universal truths and we can learn them from learning.
The shrew: This is that nagging, bothersome wife always battering with her husband with verbal abuse.
The hero: The courageous figure, the one who’s always running in and saving the day.
The outcast: He or she has been cast out of a society or has left it on voluntary basis. The outcast figure can
oftentimes be considered as a Christ figure.
The scapegoat: The scapegoat figure is the one who gets blamed for everything, regardless of whether
he/she is actually at fault.

The Initiation: This usually takes the form of an initiation into adult life.
The quest: The character(s) are searching for something, whether consciously or
unconsciously. Their actions, thoughts, and feeling center around the goal of
completing the quest.
The loss of innocence: As the name implies, a loss of innocence through sexual
experience, violence, or any other means
COMMON SETTING ARCHETYPES
The Forest- Can be a wild place with dangers and beasts; it can also be a place to reconnect with
nature
The Small Town- This is where everyone knows everyone and judges them, so it represents
intolerance.
The Sea- can be both good and evil, with dangers and treasures. It can also show infinity.
Heaven- safety
Heart- love
WE LIKE OUR ARCHETYPES AND
HEROES TO BE WHAT THEY ARE
AT FACE VALUE, AND LIFE
DOESN’T WORK OUT LIKE THAT.
THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!!!!
