INTRODUCTION
Ratna Gears Pvt. Ltd is in the business of manufacturing quality gears, gear units and allied
products established in the year 1988. The company is owned and managed by Mr. Prakash
Mahajan and Mr. Mahaveer Mahajan. The plant comprises machining facility for production
of Spiral Bevel Gears & Straight Bevel Gears, Spur Gears, Helical Gears, Worm Wheel and
Worm Shafts, Industrial Machine Gear Boxes, Roller Assembly, Crane and Furnace wheel
assembly, Precision Spare Parts.
Instruments Used
Gears and gear equipments are widely used in various mechanisms and devices to transmit
power and motion positively (without slip) between parallel, intersecting (axis) or non-
intersecting non parallel shafts,

> without change in the direction of rotation

> with change in the direction of rotation

> without change of speed (of rotation)

> with change in speed at any desired ratio

Types of Gear Cutting Operations

• Gear milling or Forming

• Gear shaping

• Gear Hobbing

• Gear Finishing
Gear Forming process

• In gear milling / forming process, the cutter is formed according to the shape of the tooth.

• The space to be removed between two adjacent teeth by FORM milling cutter

• The cutter is attached on the mandrel and connected to dividing head.

• The selection of cutter is depend upon the size of gear tooth and number of teeth.
Gear Shaping
● In this process the gear blank is driven by a gear train connected to the cutter drive and the cutter can be
given translatory feed motion.

● Gear shaping are two types -

1) Rack cutter generating process and

2)Pinion cutter generation process

Gear Hobbing
• It is a process of generating gears by means of rotating cutter called HOB

• Its is same as in continuous gear meshing where both tool & work-piece are rotating until all teeth are cut

• Hob may be of single or double start thread

• Feed rate of hob is 0.05 to 0.375 mm per rev of gear blank

Gear finishing
● As produced by any of the process described, the surface finish
and dimensional accuracy may not be accurate enough for certain
applications.
● Several finishing openumber of abrasive operations, including
grinding, honing, and lapping, shaping.
● High tolerances and better surface finishes were offered by
VMCs. rations are available, including the conventional process of
shaving, and a number of abrasive operations, including grinding
● Hence, precision spare parts like synchronizers (special shifting
components used in synchromesh gearboxes) were machines on
VMC adding conical grooves cut over its surface that provide
frictional contact to the gears
CNC Machining

Evolving from the numerical control (NC) machining process which

utilized punched tape cards, CNC machining is a manufacturing process
which utilizes computerized controls to operate and manipulate
machine and cutting tools to shape stock material.

The basic CNC machining process includes the following stages:

● Designing the CAD model
● Converting the CAD file to a CNC program
● Preparing the CNC machine
● Executing the machining operation
5S (Sort- Set in Order- Shine- Standardize- Sustain)
5S is the Japanese technology used for improving any process.
5S stands for Sort- Set in Order- Shine- Standardize- Sustain.
• Sort: Sorting of unwanted and necessary things. It helps to find out required things easily.
• Set in Order: Now after sorting for remaining things giving proper locations is set in order.
• Shine: Maintaining work area neat & clean is helpful in improving the manufacturing process.
• Standardize: Sorting, setting in order and cleaning these activities are standardised for improving process.
• Sustain: These include arrangements for making above 4S sustainable.
