BARRIERS TO
CHANGE
Cultural Values and Motor Patterns
01 Traditions of the People 02 and Customary
Body Positions

03 Leadership and 04 Psychological

Authority Patterns Factor
01 Cultural Values and Traditions
of the People
Planners may think that they are
helping people solve their problems, but
to the people it may appear that they
are being forced to accept unwanted
changes that threaten their traditions
and way of life.
02 Motor Patterns and Customary
Body Positions

Motor patterns in sleeping, standing or

working are determined by the culture
and learned early in life during the
socialization process.
03 Leadership and Authority
Patterns

An innovation if it is to be accepted
must be introduced to the members of
the community who are in positions of
authority, and their leadership must be
seen as an important factor in
acceptance.
04 Psychological Factor

Refers to the perceived needs, small

group dynamics and communication. If an
individual perceives that the innovation
does not satisfy any need or it will not
give him any advantage or prestige, then
he will reject the innovation.
STIMULANTS
TO CHANGE
01 Values held in Industrialized
societies

In industrialized societies, people

tend to be innovative and inclined to
try out new things.
02 Economic Gain and Competition

An innovation will mean more

money or a higher standard of
living, it is more likely to be
accepted.
Friendship or a close
03
relationship with the members
of the program staff

When the change agents are in

friendly terms with the community,
change is likely to follow.
04
Supporting Social Structure

New forms can be integrated into

the traditional roles, they have a
bigger chance for being accepted
than if there is nothing to link with
them.
05 Fitting the innovation into the
existing cultural patterns

Any innovation will have more

chances of success if it fits into the
existing cultural patterns.
06 Interlocking and Interrelated
Reasons

Cultural, social economic and

psychological.
