 About INBAR
• INBAR is a multilateral organization of 47 Member States
dedicated to contributing to the 2030 Agenda of
Sustainable Development using bamboo and rattan.

• As Observer to the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the

Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC), the
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC),
the Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the
Convention on Biodiversity (UNCBD), the Forum on
Forests (UNFF), and the Environment Programme
(UNEP), INBAR holds the distinction of being the only
environment-focused intergovernmental organization
based in China, a leading country in bamboo cultivation
and utilization in the world.
• With 47 members from the Global South, INBAR has played an
especially strong role in promoting South-South cooperation for the
last 24 years. Since its founding in 1997, it has been making a
difference to the lives of millions of people and environments around
the world, with achievements in areas such as: raising living
standards; promoting safe, resilient bamboo construction; restoring
degraded land; capacity-building; and informing green policy and
Sustainable Development Goal objectives.

• Of its 47 member states, 21 are in Africa. Ethiopia joined INBAR

2002 and since 2009 INBAR has been running an East Africa
Regional Office (EARO) in Addis Ababa. Up to now, INBAR has
completed 13 projects and is implementing three large ones.

• a total of 82 million hectares was deemed as

having potential for tree-based landscape
restoration in Ethiopia

• EFCCC and the World Resources Institute

have mapped 3 million ha of suitable land for
bamboo restoration.
 Introduction
• Land degradation :
– one of the main global environmental dilemmas
nowadays
– causing desertification
– the cause for declines in agricultural production in
many countries especially on fragile lands from
which the poorest farmers attempt to make a living
– the cause for rural poverty and food insecurity.
– affects water catchment areas and destroyed
watersheds, affecting the quantity and quality of the
water supplies
• In Ethiopia, land degradation:
– is pervasive, especially in
Ethiopian highlands
– jeopardizing the livelihoods of the
rural poor.
• Main causes of land degradation in
Ethiopia include:
– Deforestation
– the loss of vegetation cover
– increasing demand for forest
products such as firewood and
wood charcoal
• In Ethiopian context, sustainable land
management needs suitable plant
species which :
– has desired qualities for
sustainable land management-
BAMBOO
 Why bamboo
• is one of the most ecologically adaptable, beneficial,
versatile and enduring plant species on earth.
• is one of the most productive and fastest growing plants
on the planet.
• After 5 years planting, one culm develops into 40
culms
• Bamboo dry productivity can be up to 50 t/ha/yr
• Each year shoots and the 3-6 yrs culms can be
harvested
• After planting, Self regeneration
• >36 yrs utilization
• >10,000 uses
• Offers excellent opportunities for environmental
sustainability combined with poverty reduction, carbon
sequestration
• Bamboo has several qualities which qualify it a
suitable species for sustainable land management:
– improves and rehabilitates the natural or man-
made ecosystem in which it is grows by
conserving soil and water and improving the
quality of the land on which it grows
– spreads horizontally unlike trees because of the
rapidly growing rhizome, and its pronounced
ability to bind soil, bamboo is excellent for
protecting riverbanks, dam sites, lakes, ponds and
slope.
• Bamboo utilization could bring income and
livelihood opportunities for the beneficiaries
on the watersheds and degraded land areas,
and now a days become a potential global
market commodity.
Anji is a mountainous county. It was poor.
After 25 years rapid bamboo development,
the annual bamboo output is 450 mil US$,
60% farmers income comes from bamboo
sector, and benefit from bamboo plantation
and bamboo industry, they get richer and
richer
