Solar Radiation ku.ac.ae 3
Recap
Earth
Approximated as a sphere.
Diameter 12800 Km.
The orbit of revolution is elliptic. [ Sun lies on the Foci of the ellipse].
The orbit eccentricity is 1.7%.
The axis of the earth is tilted with an angle of 23.5 degrees.
Sun
Diameter of the sun = 110 times Diameter of the earth.
Distance between the Earth and Sun is equivalent to 11 Suns.
Sun also rotates, but its rotation does not affect the solar radiation.
Approximated as a Black Body.

Recap
Solar Constant:
The radiation intensity of solar radiation outside the earth’s atmosphere at the mean sun-earth distance
received on a unit surface area normal to the sun. [Measured as Isc = 1367 w/m2 approximately].

Solar Constant:
The radiation intensity of solar radiation outside the earth’s atmosphere at the mean sun-earth distance
received on a unit surface area normal to the sun. [Measured as Isc = 1367 w/m2 approximately].
Frames of reference
We have three main interrelated parts:
1. Earth 2. Sun 3. Observer
Reference frames are needed to generalize the correlations which describes the relation between those parts.
Table 1: Reference Frames
RELATION Reference Point Notes
Observer and Sun Observer location Observer lies on the surface
of the Earth.
Observer and Earth Center of the Earth Observer position with
respect to the center of the
Earth.
Sun and Earth Center of the Earth Sun rays orientation with
respect to the center of the
Earth

( Horizontal Plane Solar Azimuth Angle: It is a horizontal angle between the projection of the
sun’s ray headed to the observer and the southern direction. Figure 4. Observer and Sun subtended angles
Vertical Plane Zenith Angle: it is a vertical angle between the normal to the horizon and the
sun’s ray headed to the observer.

Competition
The objective is to get the incidence angle of a solar beam on a certain plane in a specific location
at a defined time in terms of all the angles mentioned before. [Spherical Triangle Correlations]
