NEWTON’S

LAW OF
MOTION
NEWTON’S LAW OF
MOTION
SIR ISAAC NEWTON
• introduced the three laws of
motion in 1687 in his book entitled
“Philosophiae Naturalis Principia
Mathematica”.
NEWTON’S LAW OF MOTION
1. Law of Inertia
2. Law of Acceleration
3. Law of Action-reaction

NEWTON’S 2 LAW OF nd

MOTION
• It describes what happens to the massive body when
acted upon by an external force.
• The law states that the force acting on the body is
equal to the product of its mass and acceleration.
5
FOUR ASPECTS
1. Vector equation – component form is used, e.g. separate equations for
each component of force and corresponding acceleration.
∑𝑭 = 𝑚𝒂 ;∑𝑭𝒙 = 𝑚𝒂𝒙 ; ∑𝑭𝒚 = 𝑚𝒂𝒚
2. The statement of Newton’s second law refers to external forces. By this,
forces exerted on the body by other bodies in its environment.
3. Equation for Newton’s 2nd Law is valid only when the mass is constant.
4. Newton’s 2nd law is valid only in inertial frames of reference.

SAMPLE PROBLEMS
A 15-kg object moving to the west has an acceleration
of 10 m/s2 . What is the net force acting on the
object?
GIVEN: m=15kg a=10m/ ∑𝑭 =?
FORMULA: ∑𝑭 = 𝑚a
SOLUTION:
∑𝑭 = 𝑚𝒂
∑𝑭 = 15𝑘𝑔(10𝑚/)
10 ∑𝑭 = 150 N
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
A softball has a mass of 1.5 kg and hits the catcher's
glove with a force of 30 N? What is the acceleration of
the softball?
GIVEN: m=1.5kg ∑𝑭 = 30N a=?
FORMULA: ∑𝑭 = 𝑚a a=
SOLUTION: a=
a= 20 m/

SAMPLE PROBLEMS
What is the mass of a truck if it produces a force of
15,000 N while accelerating at a rate of 6 m/?

GIVEN: m=? ∑𝑭 = 15 000N a= 6 m/

FORMULA: ∑𝑭 = 𝑚a m=
SOLUTION: m=
m
