Defining Leadership
Process of moving a group or groups in some direction through mostly
non coercive means

The process of persuasion and example by which an


individual induces a group to pursue objectives
(Gardner, 1990)

The process of empowering beliefs and teaching


others to tap their full capabilities by shifting the beliefs
that have been limiting them (Bins, 1991)
Characteristics of a Leader

                  
Authoritarian
Characteristics:
● Strong control maintained over work group
● Others are motivated by coercion
● Others are directed with commands
● Communication flow downward
● Decision making does not involve others
● Criticism is punitive

Democratic
❖ Appropriate for groups who work together for extended periods.
❖ Promotes authority and growth in individual workers.
❖ Effective when cooperation and coordination between groups
are necessary.
❖ Not for rapid decision making because it results to long
consultation requiring a lot of time, effort and resources.

Characteristics:
● Less control is maintained.
● Economic and ego awards are used to motivate.
● Criticism is constructive.
● Others are directed through suggestions and guidance.
● Communication flow up and down.
● Decision making involves others.
● Emphasis is on “we” rather that “I” and “you”.

Laissez Faire
Means: “Let it be”

Characteristics:
● Little guidance from leaders
● Employees have the ability to make decisions
● People are expected to solve their own problems
● Access to many resources and tools
● Constructive criticism from leaders
● Leaders take charge when necessary
● Leaders take responsibility for overall actions and decisions
Laissez Faire
Advantages:
● Higher retention
● Accountability
● Relaxed workplace culture
● Creative environment
● Faster decision making

Disadvantages:
● Lack of role clarity
● Problematic for groups
● Confusion about who is in charge
● Lack of structure and support
● Difficult for newcomers
Transformational

Characteristics:
● Charismatic and visionary
● Inspire followers to transcend their self-interest
for the organization
● Appeal to followers’ ideals and values
● Inspire followers to think about the problems in
new or different ways
● Common strategies used to influence followers
include vision and framing
Transformational

Advantages Disadvantages
