PYTHAGOREAN
THEOREM:
2 2 2
𝑎 +𝑏 =𝑐
The importance of the relation
between number and magnitude was
that numbers, for the Pythagoreans,
meant certain figures, such as a
triangle, square, and rectangle. The
individual points were '"boundary
stones/' which marked out "fields."
Moreover, the Pythagoreans
differentiated these “triangular
numbers,” “square numbers,” and
spherical numbers” as being odd
and even, thereby giving
themselves a new way of treating
the phenomenon of the conflict of
the opposites.
• For Pythagoreans numbers were
far more than abstractions; they
were specific kinds of entities.
Thus, for them there are
numerical basis for all things
possessing shape and size.
• This made them move to perceive
from arithmetic geometry and then
to the structure of reality.
