NATURE OF PEOJECT

IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Department of agriculture and Biosystems engineering Location: Iowa State -USA-University
campus in Ames, Iowa.

Client: University campus in Ames,

Iowa.

Sector: Education, Landscape

Size: 16,059m²

Status : Completed 2014

Justification :Because of the function

CONTEXT
As part of efforts to contribute to an industry that’s growing significantly in prominence, Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, is developing a Biorenewables Complex
to accommodate the research and education needs for the Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering Department.

DESIGN OBJECTIVE

• The old building had to be replaced. It was worn out in terms of leaky roofs and obsolete utility systems, and it was not designed to meet the modern kinds of research
and teaching programs we are doing.

• Our goal is to certainly end up with a building that will achieve a minimum standard of Gold and to be sustainable

Activities

The project consists of two parts: New biorenewables Research Laboratory Department and Laboratories. And a department that integrates the Agricultural Engineering
Building and the Biosystems Engineering Building. The department includes a facility that includes 50 research and development laboratories and a yard for agricultural
works, equipment and research. The three buildings are linked by a four-storey atrium.

the shape of the building in addition to the
buildings adjacent to the college
• The formation of the building depended on
other factors such as sun, wind and noise

• To focus on the importance of entrance the

designers subtract this part of the mess

underneath the atrium will
connect by spiral stair to

technologies in elements like huge stainless
steel and glass cylinders to display rainwater
harvesting.

• Solution : Placing the stairs at the

noisy areas and make labs as far away

Steel panels : High strength steel is a building
material that provides flexibility, light weight and
earthquake resistance at its best. The steel can
• 30 % solid 70 withstand blows and does not break and prevent
blows that cause damage to the building. The steel

% void. buildings are lightweight. The larger the building

mass, the greater it will be affected by an
earthquake
