TEACHING ENGLISH AS FOREIGN

LANGUAGE

By
RINI KESUMA SIREGAR, M.Pd
SUGGESTOPEDIA
 Definition
• Suggestopedia is a teaching method which is based on a
modern understanding of how the Human brain works
and how we learn most effectively.
Key Elements
• Some of the key elements of Suggestopedia include a
rich sensory learning environment (pictures, colour,
music, etc.), a positive expectation of success and the
use of a varied range of methods: dramatic texts, music,
active participation in songs and games, etc.
TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE
• Total physical response (TPR) is a language
teaching method developed by James Asher, a
professor emeritus of  psychology at San Jose
University. It is based on the coordination of
language and physical movement. In TPR,
instructors give commands to students in the
target language, and students respond with
whole-body actions.
THE SILENT WAY
• The Silent Way is a language teaching
method created by Caleb Gattegno that makes
extensive use of silence as a teaching technique. It
is not usually considered a mainstream method
language education. It was first introduced in
Gattegno's bookTeaching Foreign Languages in
Schools: The Silent Way in 1963. Gattegno was
skeptical of the mainstream language education of
the time, and conceived of the method as a special
case of his general theories of education.
Principles of silent way
• Teachers should concentrate on how students learn, not
on how to teach.
• Imitation and drill are not the primary means by which
students learn.
• Learning consists of  trial and error, deliberate
experimentation, suspending judgement, and revising
conclusions.
• In learning, learners draw on everything that they
already know, especially their native language.
• The teacher must not interfere with the learning process
• These principles situate the Silent Way in the tradition
of discovery learning, that sees learning as a creative
problem-solving activity.
COMMUNCATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING
• Communicative language teaching (CLT), or the communicative
approach, is an approach to language teaching that
emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of
study.
• Classroom activities
Classroom activities used in communicative language teaching can
include the following:
Role-play
Interviews
Information gap
Games
Language exchanges
Surveys
Pair-work
