OTHER LINEAR
MISS R. PHILLIPS
OBJECTIVES
◦ Identify a linear equation;
◦ Identify a quadratic equation;
◦ Know the purpose of an equation;
◦ Use substitution method to solve a pair of equations in two
variables when one equation is quadratic on non-linear and the
other linear.
LINEAR EQUATION
◦ A linear equation is an equation where the highest degree of the
variable/power is ONE
◦ EXAMPLE:
QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
◦ An equation where the highest degree of the variable is TWO.
◦ These are solved either by FACTORIZATION OR QUADRATIC
FORMULA;
◦ The general form is
SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS
◦ a set of two or more equations,
◦ each containing two or more variables;
◦ whose values can simultaneously satisfy both or all
the equations in the set,
◦ the number of variables being equal to or less than the
number of equations in the set.
QUADRATIC LINEAR
SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS
◦These look like this:
◦ Eq. 1
◦ Eq. 2
PURPOSE OF AN EQUATION
◦ To find the value(s) of the variable(s)
HOW TO SOLVE USING
SUBSTITUTION
◦ Eq. 1 ◦ Identify the linear equation which in this
example is equation 2
◦ Eq. 2 ◦ Make one of the variable the subject. In this
example is already the subject so we can
bypass that step.
◦ Having made one of the variable the subject,
substitute the expression in the other equation.
◦ In this example we would substitute
for in equation 1
Having made the substitution we will now
simplify what we have
HOW TO SIMPLIFY
◦ Recall :
◦ Using the FOIL method:
◦
◦ OR
◦ STEPS TO SQUARE A BINOMIAL EXPRESSION :
1. Square the first term
2. Find the product of the terms in bracket and multiply the result by 2
3. Square the last term:
4. Hence
SOLVING
◦ The two numbers that give 6 when multiplied and – 7 when added are – 1 and – 6
◦ The equation becomes factorize by grouping you get
