OBJECTIVES:

Write Function if you think the example is a Function and
Nonfunction if it is not. If it is a Function, write One-to-One
function if you think it is and Not One-to-One if it’s otherwise.

GRAPHS OF ONE-TO-ONE
FUNCTIONS
A simple way to determine if a given graph is
that of a one-to-one function is by using the
Horizontal Line Test.
HORIZONTAL LINE TEST
A function is one-to-
one if each
horizontal line does
not intersect the
graph at more than
one point.
THE VERTICAL AND
HORIZONTAL LINE TESTS
All functions satisfy the vertical line test.
All one-to-one functions satisfy both the
vertical and horizontal line tests.

INVERSE OF ONE- Lesson 10
TO-ONE FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVES:
Determine the inverse of a one-to-one
function.
Represent an inverse function through
its: (a) table of values
Why is one-to-one
function the only function
with an inverse?
Example:
𝒚 =𝟐 𝒙 −𝟏
X -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y -9 -7 -5 -3 -1 1 3 5 7

invert the values of x and y…

X -9 -7 -5 -3 -1 1 3 5 7
y -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
X -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y -1 -1 -1 -1 0 1 1 1 1

invert the values of x and y…

X -1 -1 -1 -1 0 1 1 1 1
y -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
These tables of values have shown:

 If the x and y values are inverted and the

result is still a function, this is a one-to-one
function.
 If the x and y values are inverted and the
result is no longer a function, that is not one-
to-one.
INVERSE OF A
FUNCTION
 A relation (specifically a function)
reversing the process performed by any
function f(x) is called inverse of f(x).
 The symbol “ is used to name the inverse
function.

 represent an inverse function through its table
of values and graph
 find the domain and range of an inverse
function
 graph inverse functions
 solve problems involving inverse functions
GRAPHING INVERSE
FUNCTIONS
MAJOR STEPS:
1. Ascertain that the given graph corresponds to a
one-to-one function by applying the Horizontal Line
Test. If it passes the test, the corresponding function
is one-to-one.
2. Given the graph of a one-to-one function, the
graph of its inverse can be obtained by reflecting the
graph about the line y=x.
