Reasons of Purifier Overflow

Justification for Choosing the Topic

• Purifier is very important in ships
• Problem of purifier affects the entire ship
• Overflow is one common problems of purifiers
• Knowing these is vital
What is a purifier?
• Device that separates
liquids of different
densities
• Arrangement of the
centrifuge creates an
interface between the
liquids
What is a purifier overflow?
• Oil flows out through the
waterside
Reasons why purifier overflow
1.Incorrect gravity disk (larger)
2.Higher back pressure (service tank valve closed)
3.High throughput (Excessive feed rate)
4.Oil Temperature height (sealing water gets
evaporated)
5.Low temperature (density of oil increases and
moves out)
6.Sealing Ring Leaky (lesser quantity of sealing water)
7.Reduced Rpm or Wrong direction
Incorrect gravity disk (larger)

• Improper selection of
gravity discs will shift the
oil water interface
towards the periphery
resulting in oil flow to the
water side
Higher back pressure (service tank valve
closed)
• High Back Pressure is defined
as an unexpected increase in
the pressure readings during
normal HPLC operation that
approach or exceed the
maximum pressure capability of
the system
High throughput (Excessive feed rate)

• High Throughput is when there is an excessive

amount of fluid that will pass through a filter before
the filter blocks or the flow rate is reduced to a
point that is unacceptable
Oil Temperature height (sealing water gets
evaporated)

• high temperatures will lead to charge escape

and reduce the electrostatic adsorption effect
• furthermore, it increases relative humidity
that can accelerate the charge release and
make the filtration efficiency drop more.
Low temperature (density of oil increases
and moves out)
• If the temperature is low, the oil viscosity will
be high, which may lead to breaking of the key
that connects the shaft and the gear pump,
thus stopping the oil supply.
Sealing Ring Leaky (lesser quantity of sealing
water)
• A liquid seal is required to operator a purifier
because if forms a separation line or interface
between two liquids. If there is no liquid seal,
there will be over flow.
Reduced Rpm or Wrong direction
• Low bowl speed or not getting the desired
rpm may result in purifier overflow.
• This maybe cause by slipping belt, worn out
gear system, bearing damage, motor is not
working fine, frequency is less and coupling
puds or centrifugal clutch is worn-out.
