• Composites are materials made by
combining two or more natural or
artificial elements (with different
physical or chemical properties) that
are stronger as a team than as
individual players.
• The component materials don’t
completely blend or lose their
individual identities. They combine
and contribute their most useful
traits to improve the outcome or
final product.

• The matrix phase refers to a
continuous phase in which a
composite or two-phase alloy is
formed in a microstructure of
metals and completely
surrounds the other (or
dispersed) phase so as to ensure
the stability of the dispersion
phase.
4
Role of Matrix phase
• Primary function of the matrix phase in a composite is to hold and bind
the reinforcing phase in position within it.
• Act as a medium through which the external load is transmitted and
distributed to the reinforcing phase.
• It separates fibers from each other.
• Protects the individual fibers from surface damage due to abrasion and
oxidation.
• Improves fracture toughness of the composite .
• Withstand heat or cold, conduct or resist electricity, control chemical
attack.

Metals with low density and low temperature toughness
are preferred as matrix metal.
