LESSON 3

SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

THE CONCEPT OF SCIENCE EDUCATION
►Science Education focuses on the “Teaching Science”
and “Learning Science”. There is a big difference between
these two concepts.

► Science Education prepares citizens for a scientifically

and technologically driven world.
►The Philippines is doing its best to improve science
education in the country. One of the strategies pursued by
the government is to establish academic programs,
scholarship, and science schools that will support students
to pursue career in science and technology and to nurture
their gifted potentials in science.
1. SCIENCE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF THE
PHILIPPINES SYSTEM

► University of the Philippines as the national university remains to

be the top university in the country in terms of the number of science
degree programs from undergraduate to graduate level.

►UP also has the largest concentration of scientists and doctoral

degree holders in the field of science. Its laboratories are considered
world-class and resources of scientific knowledge in the country.
2. DOST-FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP
► The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
provides scholarships to deserving Filipino students to
take science, and other science engineering, agriculture,
forestry, computer science, and other science and
technology courses in various CHED identified centers of
excellence and in autonomous universities across the
country.
3. SCIENCE EDUCATION IN BASIC
EDUCATION
► Basic Education remains to be an important preparation
to recruit students to study science.

► There are also several government programs

implemented by the department of Education and few
private schools for science education:
A. Philippine Science High School System

B. Regional Science High Schools

C. Special Science Education Project
D. Quezon City Regional Science High School
E. Manila Science High School

 INDIGENOUS
SCIENCE &
TECHNOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES
INDIGENOUS SCIENCE AND
TECHNOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES

 Indigenous science is part of the everyday life of the

people.
 It is considered indigenous science because it is one of
the foundations of modern science.
 Pawilen (2006) developed a simple framework for
understanding indigenous science accordingly,
Indigenous science is composed of traditional knowledge
that uses science process skills and tools and guided by
community values and culture.

1. Indigenous science uses science process skills such as observing,
comparing, classifying, measuring, problem-solving, inferring,
communicating, and predicting.

2. Pawilen (2006) pointed out that indigenous science is guided by people’s

culture and community values such as:
A. the land is a source of life and a precious gift from God;
B. all living and nonliving things are interconnected and interdependent;
C. the earth is revered as the origin of their identity as people;
D. Humans are stewards of the and other natural resources; and
E. Nature is a friend that needs respect and proper care

3. The practice of indigenous science in the Philippines includes traditional

knowledge practiced and valued by people and communities such as
ethnobiology, ethnomedicine, indigenous farming methods and agriculture,
and folk astronomy.
 Indigenous science is important in the development of
science and technology in the Philippines.

 Indigenous science helped the people in understanding

the natural environment and in coping in everyday life.

 UNESCO’s Declaration on Science and the use of

Scientific Knowledge (1999) recognized indigenous
science’s historical and valuable contributions to science
and technology.
